    Explanation: In the 19th and 20th century, the increased convenience and affordability of travel and uneven distribution of prosperity led to an explosion in immigration. A wave of xenophobia was washing over industrialized countries at this time, and combined with the already-present racism of European-dominated countries, like Canada, Australia, and the USA, a number of restrictions were placed on immigrants, especially East Asian immigrants.

    Brazil, on the other hand, was in need of immigrant labor, and opened their doors to Japanese immigrants in 1908 - resulting in one of the largest Japanese-descended populations outside of Japan itself.

      Some interesting context: Italians were the main source of labor for coffee plantations after slavery was abolished, but since the Brazilian gov’t was essentially scamming[1] them, the Italians issued the Prinetti Decree, which forbade Brazil of paying for the trips.
