Depends on what part of queens. Apparently he canonically lived at 20 Ingram St, which is a 15 minute walk to the E and F subway station. There’s also a bus that’s a little closer, and connects to the L train, but I’ve never taken it. 15 minutes is a little long, but still quite doable. (Assuming google maps’ walking time is correct. I usually go faster than it says)

If he’s a handyman, he has tools to lug around and needs some place to secure them while eating lunch.

15 minutes for Peter or MJ is easy. If Ben’s been busting his hump all his life as a handyman, let the man have his car. Plus, Aunt May wasn’t in the greatest of health either.

I live in a city about half the size of NYC and i won’t get in a car unless i have to ride my bike for over an hour.

A fifteen minute walk is like an every day thing just to go get groceries. How much do you spend on gas if you won’t walk a kilometer or two?

I mean, just off the top I can’t ride a bike (and I actually can’t drive, so I use stuff like Uber, Lyft, or Via). I never have the time to just burn two hours on travel. I really think some people overestimate the lives of other people. It’s not about “walking a mile or two”, it’s about the fact that when you work a full-time job, have a family, and try desperately to have some variety of hobby so you feel like a human being and don’t begrudge your spouse or kids, there isn’t some mythical time set aside for walking to and from places.

If I have to go somewhere that’s an hour away, that’s at least three hours less sleep for me (1 hour there, 1.5 back because of tiredness and weight, plus time spent at the destination), because that’s the only flexible time.

Ew. Maybe if you don’t have sidewalks or anything interesting along the way. Car culture makes boring unsafe spaces.

No, I mean in urban areas as much as anything else. Areas without sidewalks are what busted my foot two weeks ago. But if it takes 15 minutes to get somewhere on foot, it takes about 3 in a car.

It sucks. I should be able to walk to my local wawa but because of lack of fucking sidewalks I can’t safely!

I thought it was pretty bizarre how the one time I was in NYC, I barely saw any cars on the street but the sidewalks were packed af. It wasn’t until after dark and leaving the city on my bus that I ever saw any actual traffic.

Is the trope of NYC’s traffic mostly from people commuting in from outside the city or something? I see more traffic in Modesto at 3am than I did around Times Square at 9 in the morning.

The bridges can get not only slow but outright difficult to use for an inexperienced driver on a bad day. That’s probably the main thing that really stands out in the lore

Like anywhere, it really depends on what part of town you are in and the time of day. Most drivers know not to go anywhere near Times Square if they can help it and many of the streets there are blocked off to cars anyway, but sometimes you have no choice but to drive down Canal Street in Chinatown which is always packed.

Ah man… I forgot to check out Chinatown. 😭

I didn’t go to central park, either. The only place I went out of my way to see was the statue of liberty, and it kinda sucked because it was closed that day (went to the base island, didn’t get to go inside). I mostly just walked around randomly until I recognized something from media and was like “Hey! I know where I am!”

I was only there half a day, and it was not really planned. I had just gotten injured falling down the stairs working on a cruise ship, and that’s where I got off to go home. Otherwise I would have also seen central America going through the Panama Canal and Hawaii where the ship would begin normal operations… 😮‍💨

Honestly, Chinatown probably isn’t the best tourist spot. Unless you have a specific destination there it can be a bit of a clusterfuck.

Hope you got better from that fall. Sucks you had to miss out on the rest of that voyage. Do they just sail in open water from Panama to Hawaii?
