SLS is 7 years behind schedule, and at least 40% over budget, costing over $23B so far. It has been in development for nearly 2 decades.
I don’t have the exact numbers in front of me for the Orion capsule, but it is also behind schedule and over budget, costing over 30B so far. It has been in development for nearly 2 decades.
NASA didn’t even award the space suit and moon lander contracts until a few years ago, in a tacit acknowledgement that the original Artemis launch dates were unrealistic.
If the US doesn’t “beat China to the moon” it will be because of failures and delays in every step of the program - including starship, but not because of starship
The turnaround time from Artemis 1 to 2 says a lot. It was supposed to be 1 year, but it’s shaping up to be 3.5. That’s just SLS and Orion.
