I definitely don’t get it.
Im short: If you indulge yourself in benadryl, the ensuring hallucinations will let you see the hat man. (Basically an anxiety induced bad trip where you see menacing dark shadows)
Funny that they claim the hat man comes from 2008. LSD for the Playstation had the hat man, though he was called The Gray Man, all the way back in 1998. I kept trying to figure out what benadryl had to do with a character from an obscure game beyond both being sleep related…

And honorable mentions to other behatted motherfuckers who you probably don’t want to find standing at the end of your bed in the middle of the night also go out to:

And:

I’m pretty sure the prior art on this one goes back a long way.
That’s still probably my favourite surreal game. Fantastic but I still have no idea if there’s any serious progression, could never work out the progress board
I was looking through that wiki and apparently there’s events and stuff that are triggered depending on certain conditions being met. The other night I was watching someone play it for Halloween and they got a super long cutscene for filling in the face in the middle. I always thought the board was just for showing the kind of dream you had and that everything else was pretty much random or dependent on the day counter. I’m gonna have to load it up now and see what I’ve missed.
There’s a wiki for it? Now I’m keen to try again
Oh yeah, it’s in my first post, but here’s the main page. Just read more this morning before work. I had no idea you can kill the soldier in the violence district or the wolf in the temple. You can also ride the train and ferris wheel in happy town.
If you take a large enough dose of Benadryl you will…
If you have long hair you can sometimes see the hat man out of the corner of your eye without even taking Benadryl.
Ah!! Oh it’s just my jacket on the coat rack
Have fewer allergy symptoms?
Does no more allergy symptoms ever again qualify as fewer allergy symptoms?
Also no more breathing.
Or experiencing.
Because you’re dead. In case you didn’t catch it.
But what BeigeAgenda is referring to is that a high dose of Benedryl, aside from being a really terrible way to end up dead, or at least wishing you were dead, is a deleriant that is basically guaranteed to give you a really bad trip. One experience that those experienced in such often talk about is a visit from “The Hat Man.”
When you take Benadryl the Sandman will creep up and knock you out.
Diphenhydramine is like torture to me. Sets off my restless legs on the bottom half, knocks out the top half. I’m twitching like hell from the waist down, praying for sleep up top. This goes on for hours.
I completely stopped taking that stuff as a sleeping medicine. I might take it if I happen to develop an allergy or something, but that is about it.
Also, I believe the risk of dependency needs to be reevaluated for that stuff. For me, I trade one nights sleep for two shitty ones if I take it. So, it’s keep taking it, or just power through a couple more days of not being able to get to sleep after taking it. I personally believe this can lead to longer term sleep issues. (I do not believe there is going to be evidence or studies to back up my claims, but I haven’t really looked.)
Sure, it could have just been psychological issues for me, but there were issues nonetheless.
I hate it too. I feel slow and sleepy as hell, but I don’t fall asleep. I just feel like I really need to but can’t.
Wow these side effects are probably why it’s not even available in my country
Best costume omg lol
