I tried switching to Linux twice and both times I got hit with problems I was unable to fix even with help. So, even though I hate Microsoft, I’ll stick with Windows for now.
I feel you. Some devices just don’t have linux support because Microsoft one way or another owns the company that made the device… Drivers are a bitch.
It was with my normal PC. I neither have the time nor the interest or the technical understanding to start troubleshooting when something will inescapably fail and the only solution I find is in English full of stuff I don’t know.
It’s wild to me how difficult switching can be when so many devices come with Linux and people don’t even think about it.
The Steamdeck is more stable than any windows gaming PC I’ve had; Android phones are rock solid, less prone to issues than a PC; Chromebooks work forever without getting malware, and receive updates for more than a decade; but try to DIY it and you’re in the fire swamp of driver issues.
Have you tried Mint? It usually just works. Atomic distros are also looking pretty promising, they’re so stable and recoverable.
I’ve installed OpenSUSE on a dozen pretty much computer-illiterate people’s computers. They had zero issues so far. The brand-new OpenSUSE Kalpa even updates everything automatically in the background, which saves two clicks a week.
I’m somewhat computer literate. Used Linux for close to 15 years, but I’m a user, not a wizard level or ricer. Currently running OpenSuse tw on my laptop. So last month I did your normal distribution upgrade and everything broke. I honestly don’t know how computer illiterate people would deal with that. Turned out new kernel broke my system for unknown reasons and I had to switch to stable kernel instead. It wasn’t easy for me even with forum help. For some people it would be impossible.
