Project 2025, and all this bullshit is happening because of a stupid, fictional religion. Priests like this one push that on everyone, including small children. “Oh, I’m a victim by supporting a hate religion, and spreading it around for decades! Boo hoo!”
Fuck priests, they’re on the nazi side. Even when they’re protesting the thing that they made happen.
And fuck these christian nazis attacking the public. Because they’re ALL real christians, doing what their priests and holy hate book tell them to do.
This is an extremely reductive way of looking at the issue.
You have no idea who that priest is or what sect he’s a part of. The only thing I know for sure is that he opposes these fascist freaks enough to get out and protest them.
I’m an atheist myself, but I bet I have far more in common with this priest than a “fellow atheist” like the current president. The only thing you’re doing here is driving a wedge between allies on the left based on your preconceptions.
A priest being attacked by the fascists sends a message to other religious people. Without allies (yes, even Christian ones) and solidarity the left is doomed.
… Have you only met hardcore Baptists and Catholics? There are plenty of sects of Christianity that disavow fascism. I’m an atheist that thinks that religion is the root of many societal issues, but you’re doing the same type of demonization and generalization that makes the right wing so toxic. Religious people can be good, and many of them are.
Sure it prevents critical thinking, but I think the toxicity present really depends on the religion and person. For example, the LDS church is toxic and corrupt as fuck, but there are good people that are mormons. Likewise, Baptist churches typically have incredibly toxic viewpoints, but there are also plenty of nondenominational churches that help communities and have broadly loving and accepting teachings.
Boiling down all religious people to just “toxic magical thinking” is pretty narrow minded and emblematic of the exact behaviour that (I assume) you find so toxic in religious groups.
I’m saying that it’s separate from whether or not they subscribe to a religion. So you pointing out that there are good and bad LDS members means literally nothing in the context of the larger discussion.

It’s still toxic magical thinking that robs people of their ability to think critically

There are good and bad people everywhere.
Yes? That’s kinda my point?
