Perry County, Tennessee is only 8,300 people. There are only a few towns in LA metro smaller than that. Both LA and Orange Counties have had corrupt sheriff’s that were sentenced to jail. Imagine what it would be like in a county where everyone personally knows your family and there are very few checks and balances on power?

I saw a docu about places like this once. People don’t dare to express non-Republican political opinions let alone openly support one. Violence threatened and carried out. And of course election isn’t quite as secret as you’d think. Voting anyhthing but Trump requires balls.

As others have pointed out, the sheriff is an elected position. All you have to do is move in the right circles, and out in the boonies those circles are the local church(es) and republican party.
