The guys of Apollo 15, 16 and 17 even brought the Moon Rover, explored some nearby canyons and valleys near the landing site, like you would explore sand dunes with a dune buggy.

Apollo 11 was entirely a technical mission, to see if they could even land on the Moon, and they chose a flat, relatively boring spot to do it. Land, walk around a bit, get back in the Eagle (the name of the landing craft), blast off! All within a span of a few hours.

The mission before that, Apollo 10, was to test-fly their landing craft above the Moon, same design as Eagle but they named this one Snoopy, like Charlie Brown’s beagle!

There was a bit of nervousness from Houston, because Snoopy got so close to the surface, the astronauts could almost taste and smell it! There was uneasiness the astronauts would think “Fuck it, we’re landing, we’re already so close we can almost touch it!”, but that didn’t happen, so Armstrong and Aldrin got all the fame.

As for the later Apollo landings, from 15 onward, they were more exploratory and scientific in nature, they got more daring in their landing terrain, closer to canyons and mountains, places where the really interesting science can be found, there were real geologists among the crew, and they spent days there.
