There has got to be something misleading about that factoid. I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m quick to believe that half of humans are completely idiotic. But for roughly half of people to not know the potato chips are made out of potatoes? What did they think they were made out of then? Hopes and dreams? Surely it was really something more like, they didn’t know it was made entirely with potatoes and not some sort of starch additives, or they didn’t know that it was totally natural (but it isn’t so idk)…
I just can’t believe that 42% of people didn’t know that Lays are made of potatoes.
Edit: Indeed, the “source” is their marketing blog, which cites no study or methodology: https://www.pepsico.com/our-stories/story/from-potato-to-chip-the-next-chapter-of-lays
Information discarded SILENCE, BRAND
Sick of ads disguised as information on Lemmy
It’s not a disguise… Fortune is a business magazine and it’s reporting about a business. It’s a condensed version of the larger press release (linked in another comment).
The Lays brand is doing a rebrand, that’s a fact.
If you asked me if Lay’s were made with real potatoes, I’m not sure how I’d respond. Depends on the actual question? I’m assuming they’re made from bits of potatoes, processed to hell and back and boiled in oil, kinda like Pringles.
We’ve insisted our food look perfect for so long that the industry responded. How many people would chunk out a chip with a little green or black on it? That’s normal. We took tomatoes and bred them to be perfectly pink and round and shiny, lost all the acids and sugars. Now some people think they hate tomatoes because that’s all they’ve ever known.
Anyway, this is marketing pushing potatoes to the forefront to make chips sound healthy and natural. Maybe they will be?
made with no artificial flavors or colors from artificial sources by the end of the 2025
Sounds good.
Lay’s Baked and Lay’s Kettle Cooked chips are also getting an ingredient update. Lay’s Baked will be made with olive oil and have 50% less fat than regular potato chips and a new version of Lay’s Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat Original Sea Salt will be made with avocado oil and offer 40% less fat than regular potato chips — with more new options across PepsiCo’s food portfolio to come in 2026.
Sounds even better. But lord, how much more expensive? Don’t eat them, don’t care.
Can’t trust the marketing team, but with RFK banning so many things, some good, some bad, who knows? Wish I could cut that fucker in half (maybe quartered?) and just use the positive ideas out his brain. Reminds me of the Nazis being anti-smoking.
I need to grow some tomatoes!
I wonder what French fries are made from?
It’s in the name: the French.
So I just checked the nutrition information and per 28 g. serving there’s 10 grams of fat. Potatoes don’t really have fat to begin with. So while they are the main ingredient, a third of the total weight is oil.
