As a non-american, there are many things that are a cultural shock to me. First it’s the fact that in America they just leave the packages on the floor for anyone to take. Second is that whole “community” thing where neighbours feel entitled to dictate how people manage their houses.
The whole “leave packages at the door thing” has made it’s way to the UK for all but the main post office. It was used in COVID as a way of keeping distance but now it’s just for efficiency and I hate it.
They don’t even ring the door bell most of the time, they just let their Amazon email notification tell you it’s delivered which I don’t even notice for awhile.
My neighborhood is safe enough to leave the front door wide open for days. Literally had to do this during construction. No issues. Packages on the porch are beyond a non-issue.
They try again next day, then leave it in the nearest pickup point where I can pickup my package by showing them the code and sometimes they ask for my ID.
So every single package is hand delivered? That’s crazy to me.
That is a special service here usually requiring a signature. They are uncommon.
I worked in logistics. I am not exaggerating when I say you have seconds per package on your route, and no I don’t just mean Amazon. Waiting 2 minutes at every door to wait for someone to answer would mean we’d need 5-10x the staffing.
How does that even work? 95% of your customers are going to be at they’re own job not sitting at home.
When I worked for USPS the number ~8 seconds per mailbox. Not an exaggeration.

In theory yes, in practice they often pretend I’m not home (twice) and then make me pick it up from the pickup point. But big packages always get hand delivered because pickup points don’t accept them.
That’s why I send them to a company address. They don’t so this with businesses.

Who’s responsable if someone steals it?
Theres an entire section of youtube devoted to fucking with people who steal packages. How have you not seen it yet for decades now.

The shipper will have proof they delivered it - they take pictures these days. Beyond that it is the home owner, and the police.
Though if you report a missing package once, or twice, a year. The retailer will often just send your order again for customer support.
So We could just get things for free, hmm?
