Likewise, poison ivy allergy is often an indicator that you maybe allergic to mangos.
Mangos have urushiol (the oil from the toxodendron species that causes the rash) in the skin.
People who are allergic to stuff that comes out of trees are also allergic to different stuff that comes out of trees.
Like drop bears?
I find most people are allergic to surprise maulings.
Also Mango and Pineapple
Latex-fruit syndrome is a good band name
Alt name for xiu xiu
OMG. I don’t think I could go on especially with the world the way it is if I had this. I mean im a picky eater to begin with and these are high on they rock list of foods.
makes sense, as latex is the sap of a tropical tree
I had a coworker with this allergy. She randomly had an attack at work and couldn’t find her EpiPen, it was really scary. Thankfully another coworker used his on her and she ended up being ok. We’re still not sure what triggered it; she suspects there may have been some sort of latex in the asphalt binder that a construction crew was paving with across the street.
Fuck man. I have 4 EpiPens and I’m pretty sure next time the allergy strikes I won’t find one.
If any one says that bananas are spicy may have this
It’s also why my machete is covered in latex when I harvest these fruits.
Figs too.
Yup! Good call.
good thing I don’t like fruit
Interesting. I don’t think it goes both ways. I’m allergic to kiwis and anything in the birch family, but never had a problem with latex.
I was thinking the same. I’ve always had a “sensitivity” (?) to kiwi, mango, papaya, avocado, and melons (plus bananas and tree nuts when I was younger, but that seems to have disappeared). Never had an issue with latex.
I’ve been told that it is technically an allergy, but like you it’s not the kind (or at least magnitude) that will kill me - it just gives me an itchy, burning mouth and throat. I’ve never tried taking an antihistamine to alleviate the symptoms, though - I just avoid them. Don’t especially care for most of those anyway. Besides, it’s a very weak reaction so even if I do end up eating them it’s just kind of annoying.
I only found out about kiwis because of Hi Chews candies. Apparently they really do use real fruit juice 🤣 Noticed that my candy tasted like “burning” and thought I should probably stop. Some juice with kiwi a few months later made me get checked out by the doc to be sure.
The doctor told me I could eat as much as I want, I’d just be uncomfortable. But there was no risk of death. Antihistamines would probably help, but like you I find it easy enough to just avoid them. Although seasonal allergies are starting to make me reconsider that…
What allergies do you get from the birch family? Any food allergies or just burch trees?
Only food allergy I have and know of is kiwis(how I found out I had allergies at all). Tests confirmed it and when the doctor was explaining it to me he said that birch trees are part of the same family and as such I’d likely get allergies from their pollen as well. My allergies are “scratchy throat and watery eyes” type, not anaphylactic shock “my throat closes up” type.

This is not obvious to anyone who has slowly developed a late in life layer allergy and noticed after years that avocados are kinda spicy all of a sudden.
Its me, I’m that person.
Anyway though, even barring my subnormal experience, people don’t often think of the type of sap a fruit tree may have contained before eating. In fact I think that’d be particularly bizarre if one WAS thinking about that before they ate their snack. So no, its not particularly obvious.
