Apparantly the firefighters would rush to the fire with the decorations on the inside. Then they’d tear all the buildings down around the fire to prevent the fire spreading. Then flip their coats inside out to show their badass heroic designs, and then flex on folks.

I just saw some of these in a museum yesterday.
