I think a root cause is conservative emotion driven decisions. Some people will look at facts and from them draw conclusions. Conservatives prefer feeling things and from them deciding what to do. Cities feel scary and alien to them so they must be full of crime and danger.

It’s probably not a coincidence that religion, the kind that prioritizes feelings and faith, is also popular among the right.

They’re shitty people by most reasonable metrics.

Lots of interesting statistics in the article, but this one stuck out to me:

Thanks largely to soaring gun suicides, the most rural counties experienced overall firearm death rates 25 percent higher than the most urban counties in recent decades.

This is the hellhole Red America wants for everyone, where too many people believe the only escape is death, and they are willing to accelerate that.

On the one hand there is a long and honourable tradition of fascists shooting themselves in the head and I am always happy to see it, but on the other hand I imagine a fair number of these are people who oppose the conservative hellscape they find themselves stuck in, and just can’t take it anymore

Absolutely. To make things worse, a lot of good people in rural counties have never been outside them and have no idea that life is not the same dystopian nightmare everywhere. In fact, they are being actively lied to about the state of the world outside.

Even the champions of “pro-gun” politics are not immune to America’s epidemic of gun violence.

It’s all right wingers attacking right wingers too…

This guy was the son of a sheriff, far right Mormon, and he even dressed as trump for Halloween.

It’s literally self inflicted because they keep shooting themselves and in in the confusion trying to blame anyone else.

I see nothing but good things coming from right-wing self-inflicted gunshots.
