Star trek is set in 2267±1. The first double action revolvers date back to the early 1900s, and were phased out by law enforcement in the 1980s and 1990s. So on average in common usage they date from 1945±45.
So the gun he picked up is around 322 years old. He’s thinking about historical artifacts. If he lived in 2025, he’d be thinking of a weapon from the early 1700s. It’d be like dreaming of a flintlock musket, or a rapier or french small sword. You know, nerd stuff.
