Those of you in the states are missing out.

It is a thing in the states, but it’s owned by a different company than A&W Canada. The Canadian version is one of the better fast food burger joints, while the US version is often decried as one of the worst.

I get a stomach ache every time I go there (US), even if I only get a root beer float. Their cheese curds are really good though.

It’s considered bad? Tastes good to me, or is this one of those situations where me eating expired MREs has made me resistant to food poisoning?

I liked A&W before they combined their stores with KFC, and now they suck. I don’t know if they sucked before and I didn’t know it, or something changed when they left Yum! Brands, either way they suck now.

I’ll have to try the Canadian version next time I’m there.

I know I’ve been to one because I recall that they couldn’t just leave it at A&W… They specifically had a custom sign added on so it read “Trudy’s A&W”

edit: I made up the name Trudy, it could have been Suzanne for all I remember. It was in the 80’s while we were on a family road trip and I’m remembering South Dakota, but I was young and the memories smear. The moment stuck with me because I remember being amused somebody bought a franchise but was that petty, and as a Canadian I’d never seen that. I also remember that they treated us like shit while gushing over the local regulars. I got an extra laugh several decades later, during the King of the Hill ep where Peggy renamed a restaurant after herself.

There is another restaurant chain you have probably heard of that is that petty in a way.

Ruth’s Chris steak house was optionally a single franchise of Chris steak house owned by a woman named Ruth. The real issue was some legal problem with reopening after the origin back location burnt down so she added her name to it so it became her Chris steak house.

it is. i have two within a 30-40 minute drive. they just aren’t ‘everywhere’ like subway or mcd… even less-so now with the demise of the shopping mall–they used to be a food court staple.

a&w ca has been separate from the og since the 1970s when the canadian operations were sold-off.
