Im a condo superintendent, you guys have no idea how many useless men are out there. I’ll get calls from grown men who ask me to change their fob battery or smoke alarms

Maybe they have a health issue that makes ladders especially risky?

Unless you’re in an old folks home, that probably doesn’t apply to all of them.

Good job not losing one of the battery tab keepers. One of ours broke at some point (probably from a drop) and now I need to wedge a piece of paper or something between the battery and cover to maintain contact. Awful design.

I am actually somewhat jealous that you just tried that and succeeded.
VW charged me ~100€ for selling me a new one and teaching it in.
So you can actually just crack it open and just exchange a standard battery…? Ok, where is my butter knife?

It took a bit of fidgeting before figuring it out. I knew how to open one of the sides, as that’s where the mechanical backup key is. I figured the battery must be under the other side, and it took me a while before I figured out how to open it. Normally I would have looked it up on YouTube, but my phone was elsewhere in the house.

My rule of thumb is to YouTube or DDG for a DIY solution first, and depending on the level of complexity, and only if I feel the effort is too much for me (or takes too long depending on my needs), then I’ll consider outsourcing the work (but never to a dealership, because those guys price gouge like it’s hurricane season).

I’ve not come across one that isn’t straight forward to swap. Definitely look it up on YouTube or something though since there’s usually a trick to getting the fob open.

In case I feel like pooping on the table, of course. Also because the battery is covered by a small slotted lid (seen in the picture, roughly middle left) that needs to be twisted a few degrees.

The most asshole design in the world is they don’t make that slot fit the size of a replacement battery so then you wouldn’t have to go to the bathroom to retrieve your poop knife.
