I am actually somewhat jealous that you just tried that and succeeded.
VW charged me ~100€ for selling me a new one and teaching it in.
So you can actually just crack it open and just exchange a standard battery…? Ok, where is my butter knife?

It took a bit of fidgeting before figuring it out. I knew how to open one of the sides, as that’s where the mechanical backup key is. I figured the battery must be under the other side, and it took me a while before I figured out how to open it. Normally I would have looked it up on YouTube, but my phone was elsewhere in the house.

My rule of thumb is to YouTube or DDG for a DIY solution first, and depending on the level of complexity, and only if I feel the effort is too much for me (or takes too long depending on my needs), then I’ll consider outsourcing the work (but never to a dealership, because those guys price gouge like it’s hurricane season).

I’ve not come across one that isn’t straight forward to swap. Definitely look it up on YouTube or something though since there’s usually a trick to getting the fob open.
