Isn’t the “orc” an uruk-hai and the “goblin” the actual orc? I like the movies, but I’m no expert. Perhaps it’s on purpose and part of the joke?
This is also doing hobbits dirty.

Goblins and orcs are the same thing.

It’s just modern cultural convention to linguistically differentiate them by their size. “Goblins” is a more archaic and folksy word for them.

The orcs referred to as Uruk-hai are members of that race that have been specially bred to be larger, more intelligent, and unphased by sunlight, but “Uruk-hai” just means “orc-folk” in the Black Speech.

Uruk is the Elf name for them. Goblin is a generic word for boogeymen the Hobbits use when they first see them. Uruk properly translates to Orc in Westron, the commonly used language of Men of 3rd age in the books/movies. Uruk-hai are basically high orcs, ie a brand new breed of superior orcs that didn’t exist back during the Hobbit. Maybe a small handful of the first ones, but more likely he hadn’t started or at least likely hadn’t perfected them yet.

Uh, two towers made it pretty clear the Uruk-hai were cross bred- orcs with humans. This made them larger, more disciplined and more tolerant of sunlight.

Silmarillion says that the original orcs came from elves who were corrupted by Morgoth, way back when. (Morgoth is to Sauron as the Valar are to Gandalf. Sauron, Gandalf and Saurumon were all Maia;)
