Yep, emissions regulations are based entirely on wheelbase. If you have a truck which has the same wheelbase as a car then it is held to the same emissions standards as a car. The larger the wheelbase is the more lax the emissions standards are. This and the chicken tax are why the US doesn’t have small trucks anymore.
Happens to most car models that live that long. Making a new generation better and bigger every time means that you gotta come up with smaller alternatives to slot below. Modern maverick is probably closer in size, esp if it wasn’t for modern safety and styling.
If you have some spare time it’s kinda fun looking at those situations on carsized or just comparing yourself. Modern Honda City for example is almost the same size as a three generations old Civic sedan.
