I think what really grabbed people’s attention is that he kept refusing to explain why he wanted to do that.

Whatever his reason was, it was such a stupid thing to be memeing about that I felt at home here right away. Edit: this was a while back now, during the first big migration from reddit after the API change protests.

I missed out on “not pooping for a week” being the hot topic but there is more potential for funny answers to that than whatever is going on with moths and beans right now. And if you want to not poop for a week, I’ve heard opioids are effective.

It was more the lack of an explanation that hooked people, rather than just the not pooping - IIRC, we never ended up getting any real explanation for why this guy needed to not poop for a week.

It was honestly pretty great, people came up with everything from “he’s smuggling himself internationally in a shipping container” to “he’s determined to be the winner in a really weird Mr Beast video” to “he’s giving up on society to live with the sloths” before it started to turn into kind of a circle-jerk.

And of course, suggestions for stopping the poop included butt plugs, eating only cheese, butt plugs, a liquid diet, and more butt plugs.

Didn’t it turn out he was making a pilgrimage to Mecca and didn’t want to use public bathrooms or some such?

Nope, the poop thing was only entertaining as long as the one poster who started it kept it alive. The beans and jeans thing were both funny for a couple of weeks.

This moth thing is better than all of those combined. So many clever moth based memes expanding beyond the starting moth loves lamps starting point.

Beans were a good nonsensical way to show people how this whole federation thing works, and to start something rolling. Other memes haven’t quite hit the same mark, as they’re trying to redo something already done. The moth thing though, I’ve seen some pretty good ones among the expected. One doesn’t create a great meme, it comes to life on its own, often after a lot of misses.

Yes, lost of excellent wordplay and context based punchlines. Absolute comedy gold.

Big tiddy moth girl is Shakespeare level humor.

I think what really grabbed people’s attention is that he kept refusing to explain why he wanted to do that.

That’s what did it for me. I kept wondering how the reason could possibly be worse or more embarrassing than the question itself.

I thought that “music festival” was a great guess. Those porta-johns get nasty.

What if the concern wasn’t that he would have to use a disgusting bathroom, but rather that he takes horrible shits and didn’t want someone to know?

I mean, I’d certainly be embarrassed to have to tell the internet something like “I’m visiting my in-laws for a few days, and I really want them to like me. The problem is that I shit like a farm animal, and they only have one bathroom.”

I don’t remember really remember this but there was apparently also a debate around whether bathing was environmentally friendly going on around the same time
