I wanted to buy something second-hand. Unfortunately, Facebook Marketplace is the shit where I live. So I thought I could quickly register, contact the seller, and delete my account afterwards.
However, I refuse to participate in this insanity. Video selfie my ass, Facebook.
“We, a company that has allowed AI generated propaganda to run rampant and destabilize global politics, need to make sure you are a real person so you must provide us with a video proving you are real that we totally wont use for AI and facial recognition purposes.”
I 100% trust this, Zuckerberg is fine upstanding man
Yup. I can attest that he’s never said about his users, “dumb fucks trust me”
Youtube also does this
I quit facebook 10 years ago. I am 67. If this old fart can quit so can you.
Don’t make it easier for the american fascist government to identify you even further on Facebook.
I am now, and will forever remain, a child of the old internet.
When your username was all that other people knew about you, and you didnt even like them having that for anonymity reasons, lol.
I continue to be baffled about how people on the internet went from “Don’t tell anyone, anything about you!” to "Hi My name is Dan Rutherford, I like at 5849 Blasse Rd, in Tarry Birch,Kenfucky. Heres a picture of myself, my wife, my children, and a list of everything expensive I have in the house. Also my childs bedroom window wont lock. Anyway, we’re going on a 3 week european vacation now! Expect hourly updates!
PS: Heres my birthday, and my childhood elementary school, where I was born, and the name of my childhood dog. In case anyone needs to answer my security questions"
Fb is nothing more than promoting right wing propaganda.
I get it. They want to combat bots and potentially even detect if a person is old enough to use the platform. However Facebook has eroded absolutely any trust that there’s no way I’d give them this. Not that I use Facebook anyway.
There’s no way they want to combat bots. You report bot content and they’re like “nah, this doesn’t go against our community guidelines” all the fucking time.
What do you expect from a company that removed independent fact-checkers, wanted to add AI profiles as users, amongst other things? I think they relish bots and the engagement they bring to the platform, completely blind-sided by how bad it looks for them long-term.
I don’t even think they care about image. That was early-game for them. Now they’ve scooped so much data on people that they could probably close Facebook and still manage to track people based on metadata and shadow profiles.
I’d kind of think it would be in their interest to, not because they give a shit about what their end users think, but what their customers (advertisers) think. I’d imagine that advertisers are paying x amount to reach real humans that can spend money, so if it turns out that businesses are paying to advertise to bots then I can’t see them being too happy about that. Not unless they’re upfront with businesses and they tell them that x% of their user base is bots and they’ll only charge them to advertise to real people.
I honestly don’t even think advertisers give a shit anymore. If people keep buying what they’re pushing, all they see is dollar signs. If anything, the whole “advertiser doesn’t like this” thing is just some sort of scapegoat.
Like, look at YouTube - you’re telling me that somehow the company pushing some products that nobody gives a fuck about is horribly offended because a guy in a video said “Shitfuck McPussyCock” three seconds in; but they have no issue with the hatred, misinformation spreading, and general stupidity of people like Tim Poole, Ben Shapiro, Crowder, and that other dipshit with the beard and glasses (whose name I have actually thankfully forgotten)?
The thing to understand about large organizations is that appearances matter a lot and the people working in them have to look busy. This is well known phenomenon among low level employees but it applies to managers and even executives too (who have to put on a show that they’re increasing shareholder value and that their company is special somehow).
So, why do advertisers care if someone says “fuck” but not about someone whose spewing pseudointellectual misogynistic bullshit? Because there’s someone whose job description is “brand value” and if they’re not upset about something then they don’t look busy. The amount of “fucks” per minute is a really simple metric that (now that speech recognition is as good as it is) is really easy to measure. In other words its an easy way to look busy.
Of course it doesn’t hurt that the guy’s boss is probably a conservative anyway, and so doesn’t mind the misogyny so much, but looking busy is the main reason.
Zuckerborg is literally promoting bot “friends”
its not even about it, probably more data to tie to you and sell to data brokers, facebook feed most of the time wont even prioritize to show your friends posts instead will show posts from pages that paid Facebook to advertise, its literally no longer what it used to be for a few years already and probably why they were all in for having a separate messenger app for Facebook so those who find more convenient not to quit will just keep using it to maintain contact with people through it while keeping their accounts
Last time my buddy sent me a Facebook link, it wouldn’t let me view it without giving them my phone number. I did not.
You can scroll around a tiny bit vefore you are forced to make an account. This is good because it prevents new joiners.
Not on mobile I couldn’t. Full screen prompt for my phone number. No way out but to put it in or just close it.
Might be different for different styles of content.
It could be. It was a video.
Only on desktop, I believe
I cant view any of the info on events that use facebook since it blocks me after 1 page change and a bit of scroll on phone either.
I am shocked and apalled that there exist extentions that allow you to scrub ads from youtube but nobody has figured out how to access facebook without an account.
I’d imagine it’s far more difficult (and possibly illegal) to forcibly gain access to a website that denies access until you log in or register. Maybe there could be an extension that creates throwaway accounts for you to use, but I’m not aware of any myself.
I wonder if it’s possible to register a VOIP number for free and use it for Facebook. I haven’t tried it myself.
It would just be blocking a popup
I truly don’t know either way, but it would be laughable of them if the only thing that blocks unregistered users from loading more content is a pop-up. I’ve gotten through forced pop-ups with uBlock’s block element tool in the past.
Well, we are talking about a company that can’t make desktop messenger show message requests…
Discord does this for logging in from different places a lot which is bonkers to me how many people dont care about it, it doesnt even matter if you have TOTP 2FA activated, they still try to gaslight the need for phone number is for “security”
Literally over ten years ago, they wanted a photo of my government ID.
Haven’t had an account since
Literally over ten years ago, they wanted a photo of my government ID
I sent in a fake one, they accepted it.
same happened with me then a few other friends which made it easier to convince them to leave Facebook
Let them continue filling the site with bots. Dont use that garbage.
Who is actually creating a legitimate Facebook account at this point?
I moderate a few groups on Facebook, and every account I see for new members that was created within the last few years is a spammer. The people who wanted Facebook accounts already have them. Very very few actual human beings are signing up for new legitimate accounts at this point.
Facebook should just close the new account option. They’re working toward AIs talking to each other and won’t need human interaction any more anyway.
I deleted my Facebook account in 2010 after my college English professor forced us to use it for an assignment. He thought he was hip; I thought it was disgusting. Anyway fast forward a dozen years and like OP says basically the only way to buy and sell used shit now is through FB marketplace. I was willing to create an account just for that, but when they wanted my phone number I said nope no way. This video selfie thing is so much worse.
i dint create one because of that too, when i used a some temp email, the account was autobanned for 6months. then i found a way to bypass thier login popups, because i just wanted to see some posts.
boomers, and right wingers. i used to follow somed asian yotubers who fled to facebook, because it was easier to control content, and criticism, since they cant do anything to subreddits, and yes they brigaded the subs about them to shut down any controversy about them.
They’ve been advertising it hard to the zoom zooms since they were born after the window where it was just assumed that everyone had Facebook
There are no more excuses, people who say that these services are easier to use are stupid
Hey! No I’m doesn’t! 😠
Ah, hell no.

I’m not sure there’s any way you could make a computer work that non-technical people would question, at this point.

No. Common sense has been replaced by the constant normalization of tracking and personalized ads.
Does common sense no longer exist?
Yes. A government that’s out to get you is pretty much outside Western living memory, and now people seem to think that their rights are a law of physics.
I wonder what the conversation about digital privacy is like in former East Germany.
This just isn’t a problem for most people. They have different priorities or just don’t bother.
Mostly the latter. Name a private thing, any private thing. most people will punch it into GoogleMetaX without skipping a beat.
“Oh no, now there’s a video of my face somewhere”
I’m not trying to be hurtful towards you, but I guess I’m pushing back in a general sense and you’re the comment I’m replying to.
At this point, it’s 2025… Every single thing about you including 3D models of your face is in a computer somewhere.
Look at the Luigi situation. Police tipped accidentally that they have advanced AI they’ve been using for a decade that we didn’t even know about.
I’m kind of saying guys… like yeah on paper not a good idea to upload your video… But when you critically examine it, what has harmed you? Nothing, your face is everywhere. If you have walked outside one time, your face is on 100 video cameras. And it’s never being deleted from their server.
Look at the Luigi situation. Police tipped accidentally that they have advanced AI they’ve been using for a decade that we didn’t even know about.
Except that’s not what did it, and I suspect any such thing is shitty corporate bloatware. In the end, distinctive eyebrows and a good-old-fashioned snitch did him in. He wasn’t anywhere close to the radar before that.
Privacy defeatism was already fully going in the days of MySpace. That should tell you a bit about how empirical it ever was.
It’s going to require DNA samples in my lifetime.
Somehow I find it very disconcerting, that you didn’t write “our” lifetime.

I left Facebook in 2009 or 2010 or so, but I attempted to register a facebook account for my business over the weekend. I can confirm, it wanted a selfie of my business. Wasn’t sure what to do with that, so I still don’t have a facebook account for my business.
Leaving in 2010 was a great choice. I feel like I stayed on way too long only getting rid of it in 2020.
It was the “baby - sandwich - dog” era. Super easy decision at the time 😁
Guess the silver lining of this particular instance of dystopian tech-bro fascist nightmare stuff is that it causes more friction, and less people to join up.
Pretty sure Instagram also requires something similar in some cases. I tried to make an account recently to see an artist’s full postings and it eventually asked me to verify I am a human by submitting a selfie picture. Abso-fucking not. It did “promise” they would delete it within 30 days…
Instagram is also owned by Meta… so I’m not sure why there’s any surprise there.
Next up, WhatsApp will probably require a full contact sync or something lol.
Yeah instagram do that too get an account back after they lock it even though you have the password etc but haven’t signed in for to long.
They then compare that to photos of you on your account.
My problem is I have 1 photo of me on the account from years ago and the rest are landscape stuff so despite having all the information I can’t access my account
Just submit a tree
What would they even compare the picture to…
I am fairly certain it hasn’t got anything to do with “confirming you’re a human”. and probably with getting more data into their pipeline for AI training…among other things that they do. like sell your shit to a 3rd party
