It’s cute that Americans still expect an election after the end of this term

    Get fucked.

Yes, everything is fucked, yes America has always had racism, exploitation and corruption, and yes it’s at a peak right now.

Still, acting like it’s reasonable to expect no elections is a self fulfilling attitude. If that happens I’ll be furious about it, and I expect my neighbors to be as well, and I expect people to do something about it.

Keep in mind management of elections is handled by the states, so just because we have a maniac in the white house doesn’t mean he has unlimited power.

Returning to my first point, fuck you. It sucks to be experiencing this, and it’s shitty to be pointing and laughing while people are struggling.

It really is incredible how much weird anger and spite there is about Americans who are suffering and don’t support any of this fascism. Like I get wanting to boycott our stuff and I completely support that kind of meaningful action against the regime, but to come online, to a forum where literally everyone hates Trump, and to run out noses in it, just shows that their sense of superiority is undeserved.

The thing though is, that this is what the rest of the world has expected would already have happened. We had expected you to react to the crazyness

We dont see much proof of Americans reacting to any of the things that are happening and it keeps going the wrong way. Sure there are demonstrations, but your politicians keep approving one crazy bill after the other.

Yeah, seems like more needs to happen. To be clear, there are big and regular protests, which don’t seem to get much coverage. But to me a protest isn’t strategic enough. It’s not enough to say “we’re mad” and get press coverage, there should be some specific goal that mass actions accomplish.

And if you’re following closely, it’s not generally bills that are being passed, it’s the president issuing executive orders which claim to exercise power which by law the president doesn’t have. But because our legislature and highest court won’t fight back it’s treated like these have the power of law.

Until the Republicans no longer control those bodies the only check on Trump is state governments, lower courts, and private citizens/organizations.

Things are really bad. I don’t have any issue with someone pointing out reality. I have an issue with someone mocking those who believe it’s possible for things to improve.

I feel very strongly for people who fight and hope for things to improve. But after so many years of hoping and expecting things to improve, i think it is about time to encourage actions rather that sentiment

Edit: this isn’t specific to you, I just picked your comment to reply to. Bit of a rant but the calls for violence and illegal action from the rest of the world is getting tiresome.

We dont see much proof of Americans reacting to any of the things that are happening

Where are you looking? Compromised US media? Are you in the US? North America? The western hemisphere?

How much have you been engaging American citizens on social media? Where are they? East coast? West coast?

The United States is a country that is literally the size of the continent of Europe. I just saw a stat that there are more people living in New York City than all but 12 of the 50 states.

I live in middle America and it’s a very different environment and climate here than it is out east in Massachusetts. I was just in Las Vegas and other than maybe slightly fewer travelers you’d never know the country is descending into fascism. Covid was more noticeable of an impact there than the current political situation.

your politicians keep approving one crazy bill after the other.

Who? At what level? Federal? Which politicians? Republicans who don’t represent even the constituents they’re supposed to serve?

47 signs executive orders, the court shuts (some of) them down. They roll back federal laws and protections and the (democrat controlled) states work to add them back at the state level.

Unfortunately, most American media, whether intentionally or they’re just that easily duped, is creating a particular narrative.

I’m not sure what reaction the rest of the world has expected but most of the things I’ve seen posited are unrealistic.

I’d also encourage the rest of the world to engage in some introspection. American hegemony got to where it is today with the help of the rest of the world. It’s great that everyone is waking up about reliance on America but it’s all been reactionary. Why not start that 20 years ago?

it’s shitty to be pointing and laughing while people are struggling.

The USA had everything in the palm of their hand. They decided to wipe their ass with it instead. You knew what kind of criminal and authoritarian Trump was and had the the plans for Project 2025 presented to you, yet the majority of the US, over two thirds, wanted it or didn’t care.

Everyone warned you but you did NOTHING.

Now Americans are all weepy because their hubris has come back to haunt them.

      You know what? Fuck you.

YOU expect people to do something about it. When are you willing to start throwing molotovs and fighting to get your freedoms back?

If you’re Canadian as your instance suggests I can understand being especially freaked out. It’s embarrassing and appalling for Trump to be bullying our long time friends and talking about making Canada a state.

Still, you’re being a dick. “Everyone warned you” Yeah no shit! I didn’t need a warning. Since 2016 I’ve gone door to door, I’ve tabled, volunteered at polling places, met with my representatives, protested. I’m just one person but many people have done the same.

I didn’t come here asking other people to do something about it. I commented because someone from another country was mocking Americans who believe we’ll have elections again.

          Still, you’re being a dick.

Your fucking government, the one you elected, disrespected our PM calling him governor and called him names.

Your fucking government, the one you elected, decided AGAIN to throw out and not honour a previously signed trade agreement.

Your fucking government, the one you elected, implies they will take over our country and make it your 51st state.

Your fucking government, the one you elected, implies they will take over other countries that are our allies.

All this right after our water bombers and fire fighters to help put out fires in your country.

Americans decided this is how they wanted to roll. Americans well deserve what they have coming to them.

The only finger I will ever lift for Americans now is my middle one.

          Fuck you.

            I didn’t elect them.

You’re mad, and you’re right to be. I didn’t comment in this thread saying other people shouldn’t be mad about what the U.S. is doing.

I’m talking about people. The comment I replied to said it was cute that people thought there would be elections. They were saying anyone here who has hope for their country to continue as a democracy is mistaken.

When you come to a sub/community about fighting Trump and say “fuck you” you’re saying it to people who hate what is happening, not MAGA.

A family member was just down in the states visiting a friend and she was amazed at how no one seemed to know what was going on. People were just going about their lives and shrugging off what was happening thinking it will just resolve itself. This is the general population.

If you think you’ll be voting in 4 years, you’re naive.

That visit scared the shit out of her and she told me she’s no plans to ever return.

you’re saying it to people who hate what is happening, not MAGA.

I’ll believe it when I see Americans rising up. Right now, it looks like no one is doing jack shit.

As opposed to being furious about the economy/tariffs or basic guaranteed rights under the constitution?

I’m glad you have convinced yourself there is a line where you will stand up. I will remain on my couch of skepticism. There’s always another line down the road to point to.

If the direction of the car you are in is concerning why would you fall asleep in the back for months before daring to ask questions or complain?

You shouldn’t make assumptions about my actions up to this point.

Are you from the U.S.? If so what steps are you taking?

If you’re not, glad to take advice and encouragement and constructive criticism. But I don’t have any patience for “lol you’re fucked”

I’m changing international educational standards to teach more than a single geoeconomic perspective, but I’m not under any delusion that it will matter at all without a dozen such efforts happening simultaneously around the planet, which I dont believe is very likely to happen given the global level of education and indoctrination.

You’re just upset that I’m calling it as I see it. I don’t see any wisdom in not looking up (Don’t Look Up). Up is pretty fucked, sorry that stating it plainly and matter of factly bothers you.

You’re right it’s important to be realistic about the situation. Can’t effect change if we don’t understand our situation.

It’s not realistic and it’s self defeating to say there won’t be elections in four years. Could that change between now and then? Yes, but a lot would need to change.

More realistically I could see red states degrading the voting process to the point where it’s not possible for honest outcomes in those states, and that’s bad enough since it would mean no significant change at the federal level.

Regardless, what’s got me angry was the original comment from someone who doesn’t live here saying it’s “cute” to think we’ll have elections. It’s patronizing and encouraging hopelessness.

We have hope. We’re in for a lot of pain, and it’s not evenly distributed - some people will get hurt much more than others, some people are going to die. I encourage everyone to contribute what they can in their own way to protect themselves and their neighbors. But we have hope. Remember the third Reich, for all the millions who died, only lasted 12 years. Remember the United States was founded with slavery, and we fought a war to end it. Change is possible, and after much work and suffering, inevitable.

Any given individual deciding to give up and that there’s nothing we can do won’t result in the MAGA/Trump era lasting forever, but it could help it last longer than it needs to.
