“Closed markets don’t work anymore” says the guy using tariffs to artificially close off the access to the world’s markets.
They’ve crippled most nonprofits and small corporations. Mission accomplished. They’ll use the windfall from a new free trade agreement to snap up market share and assets. And about 100 years later, rinse and repeat.
Shit happens every 6 or 7 years like clockwork. Weird, huh?
He wants bilateral open markets ie some form of neoliberal apocalypse. For some reason he thinks this benefits the US, as if the world is tripping over itself to buy over priced mid quality American products.
The tariffs are simply a means to that end. From their perspective it’s either no or equal tariffs both ways.
The world does buy a lot of intangibles from the US. Music, software, and service subscriptions come to mind.
Services for sure. The US has a massive surplus with the rest of the world on services which intentionally doesn’t get brought up because it doesn’t fit the narrative.
Hopefully the world will move away from that though.
