This is Public Relations from a billion dollar+ corporation known as the catholic church. Nothing more.

They still cover up for rapist priests. They still spew hate from their holy hate book. Still anti LGBT. Still want to force your children into their bullshit hate religion. Still interferes in your politics to make sure you don’t have a say.

Fuck religion. Fuck this pope. Fuck his supporters.

      cult /kŭlt/ noun

A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.

Is the catholic church really a cult or are you just being an edge lord?

Even just by the definition you posted, literally every single religion is generally considered extremist or false by every other religion and by folks who aren’t superstitious, and therefore every single religion is a cult.

And you call my take edgy?

But even if we turn the focus to just Christianity, there’s no biblical basis for establishing a pope or shit like purgatory - at some point we just decided to pin some dude with the title of Boss Christian and sprinkle in some other shit that isn’t even part of Christian mythology.

The only difference between that and David Koresh is scale, so again even through the lens of Christianity, yeah it’s a fucking cult.

Religion has been really good at carving out exceptions to hide their batshittery.

You believe in a crazy man that pisses vodka and walks on lava? You’re a crazy delusional man!

You get a million people to believe your horseshit, wait a minute, respect this man’s religion!

So yea, they are both cults, both would be classified as mental illnesses if, again, they didn’t carve out exemptions for religion.

I would have used a definition that mentions size/scale of the organization if I wanted to refute them, tbh.

If they’re anything like my grandmother, who was a devout Catholic, they’ll say the Pope needs to mind his own business.

Wasn’t there a whole contigent of catholics that explicitly said the last pope was illegitimate? I figure they’ll just keep playing that same tune until it’s someone that’s as shitty as they are. Then the same process that was “broken” before will suddenly be perfectly fine.

There’s a conspiracy theory that every Pope has been illegitimate since 1958. The reasoning is pretty dumb, but I’ll put it out here:

          • The reforms made during Vatican II are blasphemous.
          • No legitimate pope could endorse the blasphemy due to infallibility
          • Therefore the popes have been illegitimate.

I’m not Catholic, but I can see the fallacy there.

Interesting enough, the sedevacantists think the entire line after 1958 are pure antipopes, there’s a splinter group of sedeprivationists, who think like you said: the post-1958 line can regain legitimacy once they renounce the so-called heresy.

You had to wonder if this was one of the reasons they chose to very quickly elect an American pope with ties to South America and Europe.

      Yes.

This is what he said in the past.

“Cardinal George of Chicago, of happy memory, was one of my great mentors, and he said: ‘Look, until America goes into political decline, there won’t be an American pope.’ And his point was, if America is kind of running the world politically, culturally, economically, they don’t want America running the world religiously. So, I think there’s some truth to that, that we’re such a superpower and so dominant, they don’t wanna give us, also, control over the church.” – Robert Prevost

We are essentially in that situation right now.

I’m sure he’s speaking of all immigrants, but Latino immigrants are overwhelmingly Catholic.

Just stating a fact. The whole situation is terrible.
