News@lemmy.world•British Woman shot by dad in Texas after 'arguing about Donald Trump'
5·4 days agoSome folks just don’t get that not everyone loves guns or wants to have them around. When we visited my in-laws, my partner’s dad tried to insist he bring home his childhood guns. We lived in Massachusetts at the time, a state notorious for not handing gun permits out willy-nilly, and neither of us had a permit. Dad was like “just keep in in your car, it’ll be fine”. We drove a hatchback, we didn’t even have a locking trunk, much less a gun safe.
We did not go home with any guns on that visit.
Partner’s next visit, partner flew and his dad tried to give him guns again. Still no gun permit. Yeah, let’s fly through Logan airport with a gun in carry-on luggage. Never mind partner was flying to a third state prior to heading back to Massachusetts. Just nuts.

3·4 days agoYes, the y-axis must be inverted. Otherwise I spend the whole game staring at my feet or the sky.
Oddly, growing up my younger brother was the opposite. It was annoying to take turns playing games with him, because we have to adjust the settings between handoffs.

Climate@slrpnk.net•Farming insects mostly replaces already low-impact plant ingredients, not high-emission animal products. Farming insects is “Not Recommended” as an effective climate solution.English3·5 days agoThere’s some cricket-based dog treats out there. My last pup adored them. Current pup only has eyes for chicken and anything salty (potato chips, tears). I tried them, they tasted fine, for ą dog treat.
My parents were checking out the building site for our new house in the woods and I got bored/tired and went back to the car to nap. They looked everywhere for me and I was just safe asleep.
I’m also team office slippers. They’re so snuggly!
Hey, it’s the anniversary of that time your dad went into the hospital and never came out. Here’s a picture of him on the beach!
Let me introduce you to the epidiascope. It could project both transparent and opaque originals. The one I’ve touched worked with glass lantern slides. It expected a bright burning light of some sort, but we retrofit it with a modern electric lamp. They’re so cool.

Books@lemmy.world•Unredacted files reveal Anthropic’s ‘secret plan’ to ‘destructively scan all the books in the world'
2·10 days ago“destructively scan” makes sense. It’s a PITA to scan books–their spines get in the way and the images are warped, so you have to do fancy image editing. You also have to turn the pages somehow.
It’s much easier to cut off the spine, turn the book into a set of loose pages, and send it through a feed scanner
That’s what we do at my school when we scan old yearbooks, if we have enough copies. We keep the loose pages around in a folder in case we need to rescan, but generally the quality is pretty good.

2·10 days agoEven teenagers sometimes prefer dead tree books to ebooks. Back when I worked in a public library, we could tell when a book was assigned reading because we’d suddenly get 10 requests for our 2 copies. The students had access to the ebook, they just preferred paper.
Agreeing: Appliances, repairs, taxes, HOA fees, and utilities are all going up in cost faster than salary. The only homeowner cost I can think of that isn’t going up is my mortgage, which is fixed-rate. With a variable-rate mortgage, even that could be going up.

You’ve not actually linked to where the CDC reports those statistics, so I’m not doubting the CDC so much as I’m doubting your memory of the statistics. The closest I could find from the CDC was that among those 65 or older “about 37% of those who fall reported an injury that required medical treatment or restricted their activity for at least one day”
That’s a bit more nuanced than what you said, and isn’t limited to slipping on ice (which may be safer, on account of all the extra layers you’re wearing).
Is that 1/3 of all slip and falls, or 1/3 of slip and falls that were reported to the CDC? I ask because, while I do believe one can be seriously injured through slipping and falling on ice, I’ve done so at least 10 times and never reported it to anyone.
Am I just lucky, or is there some bias in which slip-and-falls are reported to the CDC?
Shout-out to my college laptop, a hand-me-down CF-27 Toughbook with a handle. It was a beast and sturdy AF. I could check email, take notes , play nethack, and ssh into my desktop if I needed anything more intense.
