“Everyone says you can use any instance with any account so I tried logging in with instance A account on instance B and it doesn’t even work.”

Words like decentralized, interoperability or federated doesn’t mean anything to these people. We need good infographics to convey the idea correctly without misunderstandings.

People are staying away from Lemmy because they don’t understand why its different from classic social media. From the outside they see many divided platforms instead of the unifying it’s actually doing.

Honestly, I almost thought it was a little daunting to set up this account – and I had already used Lemmy with another account on the same instance previously. I’m still not fully content with the mix of content I’m getting here (where are the text active only coms?)

Some hand holding is needed for non tech savvy people. And sometimes the similarities to reddit is kind of like faux meat substitutes – inviting unfavorable comparisons.

For sure, and I genuinely don’t blame anyone. I’ve spoken a few times about the difficulty of marketing federated social media.

Also, this place feels like exactly like early Reddit, tech savvy, close-nit, united but also divided. Lemmy will get bigger, diversifying the platform, increasing it’s likeability for a wider audience.

That’s very true – and a cool thing about Lemmy. I both hope that you’re right that people will catch on and that it will retain a bit of that magic.

If there ever where a time for federated social media to catch on, I reckon it is now. Billionaire owned surveillance capitalism ought to be due for a backlash about now. And if not now, then I wonder if it ever will be.

I agree, and the inevitable enshittification is what brings people here. I’ve been here for about two years and people show no sign of leaving. Lemmy server v1.0 release on the horizon too.

Steady growth here, capitalizing on the inevitable fuckups and people will eventually see no value in Reddit.

I agree totally. I think people benefit of think of their instance as the window through which they view the rest of the Fediverse.
