Linux was inspired by Unix, and initially developed on Minix, but is its own OS with its own code. GNU+Linux doesn’t follow Unix philosophy with the monolithic kernel and SystemD.

Terry makes a good case for Linux being bloated. Now if Linux is sooooo customizable, how can we remove that bloat, and why are none of the distros doing that for us?

Linus Torvalds ~10 years ago called the Linux kernel huge and bloated. Linux tends to run behind Windows and it also sees significant slowdowns from each kernel version. It’s thus not really fair to compare Linux to other modern OS’s that it simply lacks the features, and improvements of. Example: Linux just seizes when mounting an external HDD that wasn’t shutdown properly (due to Linux crashing from another issue like VLC). When the drive is connected to a Windows 11 machine, it will automatically fix the drive before mounting it. Linux advocates will address these things they don’t know about as ‘bloat’.

The DSL ISO is under 700MB
The Puppy Linux SL ISO is under 500MB
Both are feature complete user-friendly desktop Linux distros.

The Windows 11 ISO is 5400 MB

Custom ISOs can be made for Windows also. People using modern hardware generally dont bother for reasons.

I never see discussions of puppy or dsl outside of suggesting it for old hardware. In contrast, there’s quite a bit on Windows XP, and 7. Puppy isn’t made for modern computers and will have problems and performance issues with newer hardware. Puppy doesn’t use standard software making it troublesome to install and uncomfortable to use. Its community software lacks polish over official packages which can lead to instability.

With the limited capabilities of Linux already, it’s likely more practical to use a smart phone for web browsing and general use, and an air-gapped (or non critical) older WIndows version for what it can’t cover.

Puppy originally fit on a 1.44mb floppy disk.

At this point, I have no idea what you’re even trying to criticize anymore, besides just pulling anti-Linux arguments out of your ass.
If you want a modern, general purpose system that isn’t bloated, use Debian.

It’s installed size on disk is half the size of Windows’ compressed ISO (both default).

And if you’re bringing up Windows XP in 2024, then WHAT IN THE EVERLOVING FUCK ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY???
