I don’t want to be the judge here or anything. Just wondering if a religious sub belongs in an instance with nothing anti-science as a rule. If its fine by everyone and the admin, its fine by me. I’d just block the community. Just felt wrong to see a Catholicism community in local.

I won’t go down voting the community or anything, we’ve got enough of those people here

I already talked to the mod to make sure they understand they instance they operate in. They explained they understand the expectations. If there’s anything anti-science or otherwise reactionary, we’ll deal with it then.

Honestly, I don’t think we should restrict communities just because they are based on religion. If they run afoul of behavioral rules, that’s one thing, but plenty of our members ascribe to some sort of religion personally and don’t cause problems.

I am a Thelemite and have thought about moving that community here since I don’t use my world account much. I think it would suck if I wasn’t allowed to do that even though the community would not be breaking any stated rules.

I wholeheartedly agree, but most people are quick to restrict opinions that go against their own, so communities like these are going to have a very hard time coming to life on instances like these (to say nothing of the instance, i love it here)

Religion is literally the opposite of Science. Religion is 100% made up. (Do we still build temples to Zeus? no). Science is evidence based. Religion is used to ‘explain’ all the things (wrongly) that Science eventually figured out. The closest thing you will ever find to god is the Sun, without it we perish. Also, it was the original worshiped ‘god’. Just food for thought.

Science is sometimes used like religion. We called it “Proof by Authority”. Thank goodness for science having testability requirements to show the authority is a fool.

I think you’re mixing up primitive mysticisms and the modern variants of religion. There are, actually, some things both science and christianity struggle to explain. Of course, both say they do, but a fool-proof argument isn’t readily available. If you’re open to it, approaching the fine-tuning argument from both the atheist and theistic perspectives is extremely interesting. Both have very good points.

I mean this in the most respectful way possible, but is there something you can name that religion does explain without relying on faith of some kind? I would never claim science has all the answers, but if I’m going to attempt to take religion seriously it has to start by giving at least a single answer.

Science does not have all the answers. We utilize Science to find answers, with valid evidence, to the questions we have. Religion just makes up stories to explain things that are actually untrue. Science is doing the work to get a true answer. Religion is just a ‘feeling’.

Well, no. Religion is nothing without faith. You have to be personally called to that faith in order to be able to explain things to yourself in a religious manner. I’ll recommend this video, though.

Wow, I was literally thinking of deleting the community yesterday, and now I see this post! I’m the creator of that community. The posts do get immediately downvoted, so I assume that people feel uncomfortable with a religious community here on dbzer0. I will definitely remove it once I get to my computer. Just wanted to say. I am definitely not anti-science and I am a normal person who got converted a few months ago (used to be an agnostic). I am still a diehard leftie and I love astronomy, cosmology, I read science fiction and pirate!!! Catholics come in all shapes and sizes. However, I do agree that this instance might not be the place for a Cath community and therefore I will remove it.

The downvotes are probably irrespective of the instance, but indeed, I don’t think this particular instance is the most fertile ground for theism, even though technically religion is not incompatible with anarchism.

It’ll probably be more useful to try and revitalise some of the other christian lemmy communities. Thank you for being understanding, though.

As long as they are respectful and follow the rules I don’t see why they couldn’t be here. We haven’t kicked out the anti-piracy communities or the Anti-AI communities for going against the spirit of the instance but still following our rules so I don’t see why this should be any different, as long as they continue to follow the rules of course.
