    “Aggressive minmax”
Look, just because my level 5 Ranger can do 4d6+dex×3 without hunters mark or 7d6+dex×3 with it doesn’t make it minmax.

The fact that he was a replacement character and happens to have expertise in investigation when no one else does might though.

Yeah, this is someone in my group - I do some meta shit but branched off to do fun stupid things I like.

Big numbers are fun but it’s not fun when your replacement character has every counter and spell for what we normally deal with, is the only high int character when we were originally all low int. Now add to that half of every session is pointless NPC RP you set up with the DM to reveal your pointless backstory that you clearly spent way too much time on.

I think I hate DND I just want adventure and to kill some goblins and stuff. The story is in the adventure and choices you make, not your 20 page backstory and critical role wannabe voice acting.

      Grrr

Im sorry you have that experience. I don’t think anyone has ever said Ranger is meta in 5e though. In my case the investigation thing fills a sorely needed role in the party.

One of the reasons I replaced my previous character was that the old one was too prominent.0p

As a DM I hope people pick skills strategically. I’ve been running a game with a team that has none of the intelligence skills. They know only basics of the world because none of them can make more than a DC 10 check.

I could make them all easier but then what’s the point of proficiencies?

I’m coming up to start a campaign soon as a bladesinger wizard, probably flipping between a duelist style character and a classic wizard controller. I really wanted a tank in the front line, such as a barbarian or moon druid so I could dance around and stab, but I’d never mention that the other players because I’d want them to have full choice in character.

The party is a higher wis than dex monk who is best with ranged weapons, a stars druid who stays out of the fray to snips people with guiding bolt and the archer constellation who also prioritised Dex and a warlock with eldritch blast of course… who is also using wisdom as their spellcasting stat. One player who may or may not join depending on if we play online is also playing a wise elephant man ranger who uses a bow.

I love the 7 wisdom wizard I’ve come up with and think she’ll actually be really fun to play, for the 30 seconds of combat that she’ll be alive for at least.
