Unlocking and cocking take less than three seconds and add a lot of safety, I see no reason to ever put a gun out of my hand in such a dangerous state

At least when carrying it, having it loaded and cocked is normal. The holster keeps the trigger covered, and any not-garbage firearm (read: not Sig P320) is drop safe in case of accidents. And that extra half second to rack the slide can be the difference between getting killed by an attacker or successfully defending yourself in an emergency.

And if they live alone and/or have a safe built into their nightstand I can kinda see their point, though I personally alway leave mine chamber empty

I’m not willing to give the psycho I bought it to protect myself from 3 seconds to cave my skull in with a bat

So the scenario is that this guy makes it into your house all the way to your bedroom undetected, but for some reason wakes you up before attacking? Seems more likely you’re going to wake up getting your head caved in, or just shot if the other random psycho also has a gun.

What do you mean “all the way to my bedroom”? He’s on video pointing at my bedroom window and swinging a bat. I’m going to hear the glass break and so is my dog. I also have to potentially cross paths with him every time I go to my car, or the laundry room, or the mailbox. You sure do have some strong opinions on this situation you know nothing about.

I know that you mean it all hypothetical, but it really sounds like you have a psycho neighbour if you list it like that XD

It’s not hypothetical, I’m describing things that actually happened and are the reason I got a pistol permit.

Thanks. Hopefully nothing comes of it. I’ve talked loudly with other neighbors about how much I’m enjoying target shooting every weekend, and how good I’m getting at it (both of these are true), and I’m hoping he either overheard or someone told him and he takes the hint. But if push comes to shove and he gives me no choice well I’m pretty confident I can hit center mass at 25ft and a baseball bat is way less than 25ft long.

They were here that night. 2 other neighbors called the cops because he was out there for hours swinging a bat around. I also showed them video the next day of his threat and of him hitting the mailbox with his bat (federal offense, in theory). They didn’t do anything but talk to him. Then he assaulted another resident a few weeks later, shoved his door open and whaled on him a bit. Class A misdomeoner for that, which means most likely community service. I’m hoping he gets mandated therapy because I’m fairly certain he’s schitzophrenic (his problem with me is he somehow got the idea in his head that I hacked his wifi and broke his Roku). But I’m not holding my breath.

I grew up in a rough neighborhood. I went to high school with Latin Kings. It is so fucking stupid I had to buy a gun specifically to carry on my on own property in the quiet little suburban town I moved to but I’m convinced he’s eventually going to force me to defend myself and I am not getting murdered by this motherfucker.

yeah all this makes complete sense. but someone who is actively threatening and sometimes assaulting people should not be able to just keep going with their lives. the cops need to do something

can you get those iron bar things to put on your window, so that even if it does break, the guy isn’t able to easily go in? i have seen some people suggesting an alarm system, but the window breaking sound is probably enough.

also, are you able to go to a psychologist? i’m assuming this has been going on for at least a few weeks, and it can’t be good to sleep anxiously every night for that long. and having someone who can help you after the guy is dealt with would be good too (and considering the situation, i’d guess it’s probable you’ll get some long lasting psychological trauma, so a psychologist would be good)

i really hope the guy gets dealt with soon and that you won’t have to wait long to sleep well

If you’re so concerned with such a scenario, I’d rather suggest you get something to detect intruders earlier so that 3 seconds don’t matter.

Also as others have pointed out, you’re replacing one risk with another way more likely one. But you do you.

I’m concerned with such a scenario because the guy lives 2 doors down from me. He’s threatened me before and I have video of him staring at my bedroom window in the middle of the night, pointing at it, and swinging a bat.

It sounds like OOP installed some sort of dumb 3rd party mod. A well built and maintained gun isn’t going to fire unless you pull the trigger. I live alone, my holster covers the trigger and I practice trigger discipline when I’m handling the gun. I’ll be fine.
