This is the movie I show people when I want to introduce them to cyberpunk. Its got everything: dark distopian future, cybernetics and transhumanism, rebelling against the system, cyberspace hacking, etc. AND its written by William gibson! Its the most direct adaptation of his neuromancer universe ever put to film!
There is a fancut floating around the net that includes deleted scenes that were rescued from a dumpster. However, in my opinion, the scenes dont add much and slow down the pace of the movie a bit too much.
Every time I watch the movie, I WANT to really like it, but it’s just made kinda poorly. They totally messed up the tone. iirc the directors wanted to make a kinda lowkey ironic artsy film, but suddenly Keanu Reeves to big bc of Speed so the producers suddenly started adding money and demanding a blockbuster.
Here’s a quick snippet from an interview with William Gibson in 2014:
“I was really fond of the film that I wrote and that Robert shot, but that wasn’t the film that Sony Image Works released. It’s a really extreme example of not being the director’s cut. It was written to be comic in its own way, and be a commentary on sci-fi films and how they are made. Keanu never played any of it straight because we didn’t want him to.”
So yeah, it sounds like Keanu’s performance was intentional but then the studio messed with the movie so much that his performance didn’t make sense anymore.
The day of the week is wrong. It can’t be a thursday if the date is 5 years ago with one leap year. It was a sunday.
Now I don’t remember where the movie is set, but 29°C? In January?

But the film is set in Beijing for this shot so i’m guessing it’s just a play on global warming.
Doesn’t the movie start with him in like Singapore or something then he flies to Newark?
