Quaker guns are a proud American tradition! As is taking the piss about them. After the Union cautiously marched on Centreville and found an empty fort full of circumcised logs, G.N. Barnard photographed a soldier pretending to fire it.
The ones from the genuinely-occupied Port Hudson used much less effort, because someone understood chiaroscuro and just painted the leading edge black.

Explanation: A great deal of work was put into disguising the actual target of the D-Day Landings, including ‘fake’ military buildups in Britain to fool the Nazis. These included literal inflatable tanks - not convincing up close, perhaps, but a Nazi scout plane taking pictures at a few thousand feet in the air won’t know the difference!
