This is the 5.1 audio stream issue when you watch on 2.0 or 2.1 setup. Either get a 5.1 system or a sound bar, or use some sort of down sample/compression to combat that.
k-lite codec pack. Comes with LAV Audio Decoder. You can turn on downmixing for any kind of video file Media Player Classic can play with the pack, and it can play anything. Pretty sure you can use LAV without media player classic or the whole pack, but I haven’t tried.
On Windows MPC-HC is my choice of video player. On linux you got VLC which probably has downmixing.
I bet this stems from streaming movies on something like myflixer where there is no option to switch from 5.1 to 2.0 and this becomes a huge PITA.
Also, for Jellyfin users, there is a few downsampling options in the dashboard.
Use subtitles.
That’s just the worst though. Why not just make it so we can hear the damn movie? I don’t want to be reading subtitles the entire film. I want to be watching the damn movie!
I’ve noticed as my daughter gets older, she’ll read some of the subtitles on the screen. It’s a win/win. I get to understand what the hell is going on, she gets exposure to spelling words she wouldn’t normally encounter.
If you’re watching through Windows, at least Windows 10, turn on Loudness Equalization. Windows does a surprisingly amazing job at equalization.
Any linux solution
Yeah! Pulse Effects is free and you can set up equalization using that. I haven’t been able to get it as tuned as the inbuilt Windows one, but it’s better than stock for movies. I would love an OSX solution that didn’t cost money, as well. I haven’t found one yet and I use all three OSes.
