I am considering upgrading to a newer controller. My demands are meager, its just a little project to have fun with moonlight streaming. I’m more concerned with the ergonomics and bluetooth stability than anything.

I go to best buy. I put a sony dualsense controller in my hand. mostly feels right, but I can’t get it off the display to feel how my wrists bend with it in a natural position. Instead of a tether, it’s bolted to the fucking table. so I can see what it looks like but not hold it as it’s intended to be used.

Fine, they don’t have the red one I like anyway. Let’s look at the 8bitdo ultimate 2 and pro3 controllers…nope, not in stock. There’s a gamesir super nova that will supposedly do what I want but its in a sealed box so I cannot handle it to feel the ergonomics of it, so I have no idea if I’ll actually like it. It’s an ugly color scheme anyway, I’ll just look elsewhere.

I hit up the exchange. They have a used red dualsense controller, employee takes it out of the case, it’s in good shape though I have no idea if this will be cursed with stick drift that I hear these tend to have. Feels nice in my hand, but its only $5 less than a brand new one that won’t have that same risk. And the new ones aren’t in red. I’ll keep looking.

Found a steam controller, played with that. I can see that being great for steam games, but button-based retro console stuff? not so much. There’s a scuff controller that’s really nice. Oh it feels excellent in the hand. has more options than I would ever need. visually pleasing white and grey. But its not bluetooth compatible so it won’t pair to my appletv for moonlight streaming. I could rig up another way to relay commands to the linux box in the basement maybe but, wait, it’s windows only and needs corsair’s software to actually use it? Wait, corsair makes this? pass.

I go to gamestop for the first time in about a decade. I see the cards for controllers that say to bring them to an associate to purchase the actual controller. But I can’t because it’s locked behind that magnet bar thing. So I need to get the employee to unlock the cardboard card to bring to that same employee to get the product I actually want. Whatever, I go to the employee working this shift and see he has a nice looking black super nova controller behind him. I ask if he has one opened or preowned already I could feel and see if I like. no. I ask if we can open the box and see the product. no. I ask if I can buy it, open it in store, and return it if I dont like it. only if it is defective, so no. fuck it, I’ll take that the red dualsense controller.

He goes to the wall with the controller card and says having the card up doesn’t mean they have that actual controller in stock (there are several of this color up and empty spots where other colors were hanging but okay) and after checking, no they don’t have it.

So I can’t actually hold a handheld device to see if I want it, if I can even find it, and if it’s there, I have to just guess based on marketing art how my wrists will appreciate it.

So I went home without buying anything and will just manually fix the mapping of my DS4 controller, which for some reason is fine everywhere but where sunshine passes it to steam. Because that is free, it has support, and people will help me with shit I can’t figure out on my own. AND I CAN TOUCH THE THING.

    Alright homies, listen up:

Stick drift is easy to fix. Once you do it right you can reliably fix it every time.

Buy a few replacement modules (don’t worry, no soldering is required). They usually come with the crappy torx screwdrivers needed to disassemble most modern controllers.

As far as I know, virtually every controller uses these modules, except for hall-effect modules, and the weird slidey analog pads Nintendo use.

You see the 2 green sides? You can pull them outwards to access the pads.

Simply swap the pads out (you’ll need tweezers) and push the green face plate back onto the component.

    Done!

Don’t spend a fortune on a new controller when you can fix it for under $10.

Look at the old pads, you’ll normally see some very obvious discolouration which points to moisture damage, stretched springs from frequent use, or cum from poor hygiene.

I like playstation controllers, and barely anyone copies their style over the horrible Xbox design, so I just use actual Sony Playstation controllers. Don’t really care which gen (ok maybe not pre-dualshock), cuz its the layout that matters to me. I fucking hate the offset stick placement everything but Playstation has. Even the god damn Steam Deck has that offset garbage.

This post made me realize that i guess i"m not that picky when it comes to controllers. I’ve mostly used playstation controllers all my life because i’ve been a console gamer since i was a kid, even now with a gaming pc i still have a ps5 as well. Playstation controllers have always been fine to me. Also have a switch pro controller for my switch which is fine as well. When i go back to ps4 or 3 controllers i do notice that the dualsense is the most comfortable in comparison, but after using an old dualshock for a while i can easily get used to it again.

Also, i might just be very lucky, but i’ve never experienced stickdrift on any of the controllers i’ve owned. The only wear and tear issues i’ve ever had was the rubber from the joysticks on my ds2 being completely degraded, which makes sense after all those years, and my ds4 had the button on the inside of the trigger break down. Ended up replacing that and it worked again. I should probably get some new rubber sticks from aliexpress for my ds2 as well. Would be nice to restore it since it’s the only legit ds2 i have, and it still worked fine from what i remember.

You’re not in a rush which is good. Check out the up and coming steam controller. We don’t yet have details on price but it will be well supported and will work and can be updated without Microslop’s windows only software. I’ve never had a Sony controller but I’m assuming updates come from windows only software as well.

I am really excited for their controller - if it’s just like the Steam Deck we are in for a real treat. So many nice features and remappable through the Steam interface.

I bought the 8bitdo pro3 directly from their website. 30 day return policy, but you do pay shipping if its not faulty. To me its just slightly different to playstation controllers, so the shape and feel is fine. Controller has been working great. I may get another soon, looks like orange is back in stock.

I absolutely swear by these things, and the upcoming Steam Controller is the only thing that’ll make me shelve it. I’ve got 3 of them lying around at this point.

I recently got a 8Bitdo Ultimate 2C as a gift and I love everything except for the color. That’s really the least of my concerns. It’s a fantastic all account controller with excellent features for what I would call a fair price (considering other “premium” controllers are like $150+)

8bitdo is the only 3rd party controller maker that I trust.

I bought a small travel controller from them and it’s probably my most reliable controller. I definitely need to get a full size one from them at some point.

The local garbage dump. Between the many dangerous and infectious, dirty mounds of scrap and the fight-to-the-death competition, there’s some real treasure to be found.

Ps: don’t bother bribing the dump owner/manager. They keep all the good stuff, so just take it from them instead if you’re in a hurry.

I know how most of us feel about Amazon, but they do let you refund and return anything you order for any reason. Also, if you’re worried about stick drift, find a controller marketed with either Hall Effect or TMR joysticks

Here in Germany, its is by law that any online shop has to offer a refund without questions. So imagine like Amazon, but for any shop. This is one of the pro-consumer laws here that I don’t want to miss.

I mean actually demonstrating the product is one of the main advantages of paying for the overhead of a brick and mortar space and fewer and fewer places actually are taking advantage of that and they wonder why they are losing more and more sales… I miss when we didn’t have to purchase everything based on AI best of lists that flood so called search engines…

The manufacturers are the ones who tend to dictate displays. The stores essentially sell square footage to whoever pays them to prioritize their product.

I just got a GameSir G7 online because it was a good price, hal effect sticks and triggers, and it has great reviews. I got it and I love it. I’m not picky about ergonomics though, so I don’t need to feel.

I bought my GameSir G7 from their website. I had to turn off secure boot to get the xone drivers to work wirelessly, but other than that it’s been really impressive. I got it like a week after the Steam controller was announced, which honestly I’m not super excited about. The only thing I use my steam deck touch pads for is as a virtual keyboard, and it’s not a fast way to type at all. I probably would’t use them at all if I’m at my desktop.

I try to buy things directly from company websites if possible but if I can’t I just go to Amazon because they have a great return policy and stores suck now anyway

It can also be more expensive in stores. I saved $5 getting an official Xbox controller off Amazon versus in person target (where I also needed to find an employee to unlock it and there was a line of people at the tech counter already)
