Original Aldi in general was founded on being frugal, but one of the brothers was so stingy that he didn’t want to sell cigarettes, considering that they would get stolen. They parted ways over that, which led to the two separate chains.
Fun Fact: Around 30 years ago, Walmart tried to get into the German market and got completely obliterated.
Then the German discounters counterattacked and the rest is history.
