Specifically, an apt update neither upgrades the packages (only syncs the repo), nor should it magically change your shell to sh without giving you any output, except if you enabled the --silent option, which was not enabled in this case, and even then I’m pretty certain it would only cut out verbose output like the specific repos, but not the „synced repos. X packages can be upgraded” message.
