I have an outdoor koi pond aka happy hunting ground for a local great blue heron.

Damn thing has gotten bold over the years. It sits on the neighbors roof and stares accusingly at me for sitting next to my pond and interrupting his fishing. For over 10 years he has been hunting in my pond.

He has been around a bit less lately after my wife’s dog decided he looked like some tasty chicken and sneak attacked him. My wife looked out the window to see her small fluffy white dog dangling from the leg of a 5’ tall heron.

I’m jealous. They’re very flighty along my local river, so it’s rare to be able to get close to one let alone having another coming in.

I felt really lucky! I hope you’ll be able to get close to one one day. Thank you for the post, love the last photo

They’re especially awesome when you’re driving at night and out of nowhere one swoops across your windshield like a giant pterodactyl and you nearly barrel screaming into a ditch

Nice tongue shot! Does it have a catch? I really like that flying shot with the deer too! Good stuff.

Did you use a polarizing filter?

2nd was with a filter, the others were a different lens that I keep forgetting to grab a filter for.

And 1st shot, it flew off right after so I’m not sure. I think it was just grooming and it was its own feather, at least I hope so. Could be a feather, could be a lure. This section of the river is well stocked so there’s a lot of fishermen.

Honestly that’s the only reason why I had a photo of this one. I usually try to give them their space unless I unintentionally paddle up on them, but I wanted a closer look at its mouth.
