      There is also a problem with military commanders not being chosen for their merit or experience but because they were popular, cool guys, had tons of money or political influence.

    Why didn’t they just reposition their troops at a perfect right angle? Have they never played Total War before!?

      There used to be a show on the BBC called Time Commanders, which was basically some random people playing fancy Rome Total War.

      It was simultaneously hilarious and cringe as hell. I distinctly remember shouting “that’s just a decorative bit of scenery, not a watchtower! Fucking ignore it!”

    People considerably overestimate how easy it is to steer pre-modern battle formations, especially for armies that rely on drafted soldiers instead of professional soldiers. Give them long spears (like most classical greek armies) and the only direction is forwards.
