I could be 2-3 pages deep or even 10-20 pages. I can generally keep scrolling to infinity unless I stop to check out a post or read the post comments.
The more posts I open to read, the higher the chance that the main feed will just die and I have to manually reload the feed.
(TBH, this existed pre-278 as well. After several months of trying to replicate this bug consistently, I have determined it is mostly random. If I had to speculate, it might have something to do with the number of new posts that show up in /all while I am scrolling. When a certain threshold of new post are added to the feed, an index that is used to track my spot in the feed gets broken and is unable to fetch another page.)

Interesting, I haven’t seen that.
I have cut back my Lemmy usage recently so there is usually quite a bit to scroll though when I do check it.
I think the only way to replicate it almost reliability is to spend time on a post, reading and replying to multiple comments before backing out to the main feed and then continuing my doom scrolling.
Again, it’s an annoyingly random bug that seems to have some kind of temporal aspect to it. (If I was crazy enough, I would plot out the times of day it happens most and try and correlate it to Lemmy post volumes.)
