See, what I think is the problem with what he’s saying is that he’s been doing this "both sider"ism, which is nonsense. You don’t need to think one side is with the angels and the others are devils, but to morally equate them is naive at best.
So it’s interesting that the point you’re picking up on is when he’s talking about cancel culture, so a good question to ask here is “who do you think has been wrongly cancelled?”, which sadly the interviews at the time don’t much delve into.
I assume you don’t listen to Rage Against The Machine because they’re too political? Or Megadeth? Dead Kennedys? Pearl Jam? Bruce Springsteen? System of a Down? U2?

He isn’t bothsidesing to say that politics are polarized on both sides. And he did nothing wrong by elaborating on the purity test bullshit on the left. He doesn’t even say he disagrees with the left (he did support Bernie after all), he just hates that one imperfect comment gets you dragged on social media. Kind of like this. Most of the “both siders” want to equate authoritarian right wing statements with moderate left wing in order to create a false equivalency and implying that they’re all the same, and stuff like this shifts the Overton window towards right wing authoritarianism.
The chance of new scandals popping up is greatly reduced.
