tl;dr: pepsi man who ran Apple to the ground in the '90s is now full on AI
It’s easy for Sculley to take pot shots at Apple Intelligence. We’ve all done so, it’s a clear failing on their part.
The iPad was introduced, as the Newton, under Sculley, and it couldn’t sell. Sculley basically drove Apple into the ground. What Jobs did to come back shouldn’t have worked and wouldn’t have worked if Sculley had run the company well at all.
That said, I’m not a fan of shooting the messenger if the message itself is good, and it is. Apple Intelligence sucks, full stop. And Siri used to be better.
Regarding Apple and competition, Woz said it better. Something to the effect of “I love the iPhone, I just wish it did half the shit my Android phone does.” If you don’t like Apple because of the iPhone, or Steve Jobs’ rhetoric, Woz is totally your guy. He’s all about open protocols and tech being for everyone. Apple should have gone to him, but he never wanted to run shit, he just wanted to write code and play with computers. I’m the same way, so I can’t judge him for never trying to take the reins. Hell, if the CEO title went to Woz when Jobs left, if Sculley had vacated it to him… honestly though, I’m not sure Apple would be as big as they are today. But they’d have more respect from people who don’t like them. So when I hear people say “Apple should be more like _____,” I think, they would have been with Woz in charge, and certainly not as successful, so… why?
John Scully is aging rapidly to live up to his surname.
But he’s wrong. openAI is not a competitor, Apple has just milked the steve era for the max it can, and now with cooks retirement, Apple will slide back in between the others.
No more innovation to be done, just like at CocaCola and PepsiCo. Maybe that’s the part he’s recognising.
