LGBTIQA+ advocates are concerned the social media ban will have a significant impact on queer youth in regional and remote areas of Australia. They say there are not enough offline, physical supports for these teens to access when the ban comes into effect.
I’d argue that social media really shouldn’t be used by anyone. Not in its current form anyway. Forums are fine, anonymized shit that can be curated like Lemmy is okay.
I also don’t think “won’t somebody please think of the gay people” as any more compelling than “won’t somebody please think of the children?”
Social media is toxic and the kind of genitalia you like doesn’t really factor into that at all.
I agree. We had the experiment, and it failed in every aspect. It’s not made people more social, society better, the truth to prevail, or improved any aspect of media. A responsible government would have regulated them like broadcast media, but at this point there should be moratorium on social media and AI generated media for 5-10 years where it’s just banned, at least in the US, but I don’t think it would really hurt if implemented anywhere
