As expected, the people who were already doing illegal things with machetes don’t care about the machete ban. I can’t see Victoria backing down on it though, they’ll probably claim safety requires expanding the ban to knives in general and screw over more law abiding people.
I don’t think anyone is surprised that people who would use a machete against another human would not return the machete… however it’s more of a longer term plan to reduce ease of access to machetes over time. Yes, if someone was hellbent on using a machete they would be able to source them.

Apparently the perpetrators fled the scene before the police arrived. So your suggestion wasn’t an option in this case.
And when the police do manage to find these people, I can think of a few other things the police might like to try before resorting to killing people.

I disagree, the behavior is often a symptom, so if you were to simply shoot people like you are requesting… more people would fill the hole. Need to address culture, lack of community etc

Australian cops have a long history of shooting people wielding weapons. It has worked out for us so far.
