Long story short, there is a sort of clique of instance admins who run the whole “curated block-list” scene and somehow the shitlib white lady who runs mastodon.art who decided as an adult to settle in South Africa is in on all of them (there are other main characters too through). A lot of cool instances end up on these block-lists for personal slights, deliberately being blended in with the pedos and nazis. A lot of cool instances also hold a lot of disdain for these people, so as long as you have an instance admin who CHECKS shit before throwing hundreds of random domains into their block list, you will be off to a good start.
Also @[email protected] yeah that’s me. I run toots.matapacos.dog. It’s a solo endeavor and I am not as good as the whole group of mods and admins who make Hexbear what it is, but I try to run it with the same ethos. There have been on-again-off-again bot attacks on the fediverse taking advantage of open sign-up instances (I don’t do CAPTCHA and recommend disposable email addresses), so registration requires approval. I usually get around to these about once a week (the fucking shit doesn’t send me notifications until after I approve the accounts lmao).
I started it basically because I wanted a place where we’re all in the same boat, rather than getting picked off here and there by random admins with a grudge. We’re blocked by relatively few instances, but that’s mostly because we keep a low profile (usually). I generally prefer to stick up for my comrades rather than appease some NAFO shitlib admins though. We also have a non-federated posting feature, which comes from the Hometown fork.
The infrastructure of the site is due for upgrades. I’ve been balancing getting a bigger VPS with transforming the instance to Sharkey (a Misskey fork). It isn’t the most stable server in the world, but the uptime still is fairly good. You might struggle uploading videos of any length longer than “short” though. Also, federation with Lemmy instances is extremely flaky, but this is for technical reasons, not political ones.
Mastodon, you better believe it. Somebody wrote a very long vignette about the history on it’s blog here: https://aria.dog/barks/ethics-in-transgenderism/

We truly are the ghost haunting the fediverse
