Perfect Dark (N64) was and is one of my favorite games. Microsoft came along and downgraded it (in my opinion ruined) with perfect dark zero.
I still was hopeful to see the reboot for the new era of consoles. Until I saw the gameplay demo. It’s like they hired people who specifically didn’t play any Perfect Dark game. When it got axed I wasn’t surprised and was actually happy, ironically.
I personally never believed it existed. And maybe I’m jaded by the consistency but games that are great but dont already have a franchise dont come back. Someone just buys the name and puts it on their barely similar game it feels.
The marketing comes first the game comes later. I don’t play marketing.
PSA: Perfect dark (original n64) has a community-made PC port that’s beyond excellent.

I hated the original because the low framerate gave me bad motion sickness. The PC port is like magic by comparison.
We made a multiplayer mode that was me and my friends, plus the maximum number of lowest health lowest intelligence AI bots. We called it Sheep.
Just run around mowing down the bots until someone hits the target score.
Great stuff.
It was the perfect “sequel” to Goldeneye
We would do something similar, but would make the only gun the farsight XR (the one that could see and shoot through walls.) We would hold up as a team in the central tower with a moat around it on that one map, and go until we hit the 1000 kill limit as a team, then see who got the most.
I used to do the same but load everyone down with remote mines. The AI knows how to chuck a mine but it does not know how to detonate it.
So once one of the player characters finally detonated a mine somewhere, the explosion chain reaction would get kills clear across the entire map.
Loved those remote mines!
Honestly, even if it wasn’t good, I had the hope a new game could breathe enough life into the series to actually get something better later on, similar to Bombshell leading to Ion Fury.
Fair point. Let’s hope some other studio gets the rights and finishes off the game for a future release while fixing the problems before it even comes out
Perfect Dark was one of the best N64 games, it is criminal that it wasn’t more well known. It is an incredibly rare sequel that builds on the original in significant ways without doing anything to muck up the existing successful formula… and Goldeneye as a starting point was already one of the best games of that era.
I just want a modern PC port of the XBLA version of Perfect Dark.
Already has a community made port
Oh shit
No I fully expect Rare to r4emain dead
