I used to say “Welcome to Lemmy” to new joiners, but nowadays quite a few of them join Piefed instance, having a generic term is easier

You can’t follow Mastodon users from Lemmy or Piefed, using “Fedivers” seems too generic

It doesn’t make sense to tell someone “Welcome to the Fediverse” when they join Piefed or Lemmy as they can’t follow Mastodon or Sharkey users

It’s still the Fediverse. While things are connected, not everything has to be absolutely connected. There’s still work to be done.

You can waxing poetically it if you want. “Welcome to our little corner of the Fediverse” etc.

Or, if you are really that hung up on this not being the Fediverse, call it the Lemmyverse or smth.

Except that’s the premise new joiners are told when they join the Fediverse “everything is connected”.

Turns out it’s not, you have Mbin/PieFed/Lemmy on one side, then Mastodon/Sharkey/Iceshrimp on another, and the support between both is rudimentary, as people commented below

Not on Mbin at least… I follow plenty of people from Mastodon/Other services from this MBin account and interact with them time from time

Each threadiverse community is visible as a single user in Mastodon. All the comments come into one pile, not organized into clear threads. It’s a very rudimentary support. But yeah, you can join a threadiverse conversation from Mastodon, but you cannot share any Mastodon content in threadiverse.

From within Lemmy, there is zero possibility to utter anything on Mastodon, except as a reply to a message a Mastodon user has made in a threadiverse community.

It’s actually very easy checking how this conversation looks from within Mastodon! Just go to any Mastodon instance (such as http://mastodontti.fi/ ) with your web browser, click the search tool and search for a “user” called @[email protected] .

Lemmy and Mastodon can interact (yay federation!) but you can’t follow microblog users from Lemmy.

Up until recently, communities couldn’t follow other communities, because it’s just not a “thing” Lemmy or Piefed do. Users follow communities, yeah?

Except NodeBB tries to have communities follow communities. :)
