    Never understood why navy planes don’t fly in the water. Air force planes fly in the air, after all.

    Toward the end of WWII, the US was producing so many fighters that the Navy would simply dump them in the ocean when they needed an overhaul and un-crate a new one.

        No I don’t recall where I learned that. Just a factoid I picked up reading or watching Youtube.

        I remember the subject was the f6f in particular. Early in the war, the Navy had special landing vessels with equipment to maintain and repair aircraft, but by the end of the war, production was so high that fighters that needed an overhaul were dumped as I said.

        I’m pretty sure this was a video, but I can’t find the particular one. So I guess consider this a rumor or unreliable info.
