Why is this petition hosted on the USA government site Change.org for USA citizens instead of ECI where there are legal requirements for the EU to take action on petitions?

Not a citizen nor resident of the member states of EU but in Europe and my country is intimately connected, seems our neighbours are about to support this bill as well, which is very disappointing.

Dictating all social services leave back doors for meta to monitor… wow, this one may beat the Americans in the race for criminal stupidity

Do you mean representative democracies? Or all democracies? If all then why, and what do you believe would be better?

Democracy was first formed by powerful people in city states so they could rule jointly.

It really has not evolved much beyond that. Except in very small countries, today it merely means oligarchy.

While it is often better than despotic, autocratic or monarchy. At the end of the day, the ultimate tests are: how the working classes fare; the happiness index of the majority; how much corruption is in the government; how fair the justice system is; life expectancy; and access to medicine and treatments.

Thank you for explaining, and I agree.

For general reference, here are some books I’ve enjoyed that touch upon improving democracy:

              • Getting Free: Creating An Association Of Democratic Autonomous Neighborhoods (James Herod)
              • Turning To One Another: Simple Conversations To Restore Hope To The Future (Margaret J. Wheatley)
              • The Great Turning: From Empire To Earth Community (David C. Korten)
              • Beyond Outrage: What Has Gone Wrong With Our Economy And Our Democracy, And How To Fix It (Robert B. Reich)

I think that is an excellent selection for people wanting to double down on that strategy.

But for my area, I choose other ways to do the above

I’m not from the EU, but the thing is, once governments get a taste of the power over it’s citizens that these policies allow, they don’t relinquish it.

Pre 9/11, the US was already egregiously encroaching on the privacy of it’s citizens, see Snowden’s book, blog, et al. Post 9/11 America was reeling from the audacity of some faction with the nerve to attack us on our soil. I mean, we’re usually the ones to do that, funding both sides of an altercation to serve our on interests. $800 billion dollar pentagon budget just to bomb brown people. Call it what it is. Anyways, the people cried out to their government ‘Please save us from those evil terrorists.’ Our government said ‘Sure…it’s going to cost you tho.’ ‘What’s it going to cost us. Taxes are already sky high.’ ‘Well, it’s going to cost you your privacy.’ ‘SHit, I’m not doing anything wrong…what do I have to hide.’ <record scratch - narrator> ‘Everything you dumbass.’

This word ‘hide’ has been embedded into people’s minds and is a testament to the power of propaganda, of which, the American propaganda machine has no equals. When you talk about privacy, security, and anonymity, I can almost guarantee you, the person you are talking to replaces ‘private’ with ‘hide’ in their mind. This notion is what governments prey on.

This petition is full of inaccurate claims.

The end-to-end encryption will be abolished and the EU is proposing using pre-installed backdoors to electronic devices, giving the authorities access to all data. Confidential medical files, legal documents, contracts and other agreements, including private letters.

You get downvoted by people who do not read but you are correct.

The latest proposal is to use some sort of AI on your device to check for CSAM, and not more than that. It eliminates the need to decrypt the chat.

Still unwanted and uncalled for. Because criminals will simply move somewhere else. And so will I if this proposal gets accepted.

That’s what you get when you have politicians voting on a scary sounding proposal while there’s no concrete plan on how it will be implemented.

Do people really believe this isn’t happening now? Wake up yall. What is the axiom… you… the models need you. None of it is even encrypted… what did you expect?
