This is why we will never get traction with the common man
This exact fucking headline has been pulled out nearly monthly for the last 15 years
I mean we’re way past the point of equilibrium, are in crisis, are SEEING the socioeconomic effects of shifting farming bands, and getting ecological refugees begging for relief
But every fucking week there’s another 'Hey guise we’re almost at the tipping point again for the fiftieth time this year"
This is why we are losing, shit fuck messaging
Ha, fuck that… It was years ago.
“Approaching”? lol
??? … David Suzuki … one of the leading science educators and spokes person for the environment and science has already said … IT’S TOO LATE …
He agreed with the majority of scientists and researchers out there that already believe that we are already past the tipping point and that change is going to happen no matter what we do now. His message now is that we should do what we can now to deal with the changes that are going to happen.
And governments worldwide know this and change policies without talking about it. That’s the worst part. Let’s just be open about it. It is time to prepare for the outcome, for all, not just a few richy-riches who want to settle on the moon and watch us burn in their first row seats.
Billionaires planning on going off planet to save themselves is a joke. Even if they built a bunker for themselves in a remote place is not practical.
Once our planets environment starts killing us, we’re all unsafe. Billionaires might last longer but their military and security will kill everyone including their leaders once society break down. When civilization dissolves it won’t matter if you tell people you’re a billionaire. The survivors will be the ones who take over violently and kill everyone else to save themselves.
And even if you could plan on building a safe haven in space … you need tens of thousands of willing workers to build that and make it possible. As the world is falling apart, I don’t think thousands of professionals will be dedicating their time to save just a few people knowing that everyone else is going to suffer and die.
That’s the silver lining to all of this … as macabre as it sounds … no matter how rich or powerful you think you are, we are all equally doomed.
Totally agree.
Never the less something in me hopes for the survivors to finally grasp that cooperation trumps killing each other.
And maybe, just maybe, it will lead to a society of cooperation instead of competition.
Let a human dream…
Even a burning earth will be a better place to live than the fucking moon. Especially if we could deal with the oligarchy problem, but still better than living in a cave and relying on the burning planet for all 90% of your basic needs anyway.
The oligarchy is a function of capitalism. Capitalism is the problem, its what brought us here. That’s the cancer. It’s an inherently unstable system which cannot sustain itself on a long enough timescale. It will consume everything, then itself, then collapse, taking us all with it.
At least NASDAQ just hit a record high so the capitalists are happy
I really wish we would cut it out with the hopium already.
There’s no approaching, the critical tipping points are well and truly behind us. The next step is nature showing her creative ways to get rid of the pest that we are.
I don’t think we’re past all the climate tipping points; that’d start to cause runaway changes. Swift action right now would still provide a chance to lessen the impact.
The worst case scenarios would be truly disastrous though, and would cause secondary human conflicts due to unavailability of basic resources.
No. Wake up.
90% of earths top soil is at risk of depletion by 2050
Fresh water demand globally will exceed supply by 40% by 2030
We’re not surviving the century.
I certainly fucking hope not, clean the slate and lets hope a species less addicted to loud angry leaders wins the intelligence lottery
Might be sooner. That article is from 2023, that was before the rush of all these new data centers, who all needs billions of gallons of water a day to operate.
Let me run a few barf-gpt prompts until I find one that can refute your remarks and show you how those datacentres will have no environmental impacts at all. </sarcasm>
I’ve not found any updates on these statistics yet, but when I do I’ll be using them instead.
People need to understand how fucked we are.
Holy shit…I can’t believe I hadn’t seen that water article until now. That should have been the top headline of every news outlet, every day.
It was pretty big news on the day it hit the papers in the UK, I think it was front page of the Guardian.
Everyone was shocked and horrified on that day about it, comments and posts everywhere, and then it faded away over the following days and weeks as more shocking and horrifying news about other stuff was published, till everyone forgot how shocking and horrifying this was.
We are caught in a system from which there is no escape and which dictates every facet of human civilization. It will not stop until it has consumed everything, at which point it will collapse, crushing humanity under the flaming rubble.
We are about to get great filter’d.
Yup. And we completely deserve this.
We’re way fucking past the stop sign, we blew thru at 120Mph, back in 1980. We’re fucking fucked in the long run, and it may not even be that long based on the way you see the oligarchs acting.
I think you should sell the earmuffs and heavily tinted sunglasses you’re wearing.
It’s not front and centre, but The Congo and Sudan be are already there. So is the war in Syria and Yemen. And thats just the start of the drought and famine wars. It’ll get a lot worse fairly quickly.
Four times you wrote “would” in those 2 paragraphs. I wish I could share your optimism.
I’m sorry to tell you, but the tipping point is passed. We are on a course that can’t really be changed at this point. I pray for our children, and their children.
Sure, we’re on course for disaster. But pretending like there is a single tipping point and that we’re Doomed (doomed, I say!) anyway, is just a convenient excuse to wallow in hopelessness and inaction. The truth is that we’re still making things worse by the day, and every kilo of CO2 saved helps slow down the speed of the disaster. And those little efforts by folks like us, might still make the difference between 1 billion dead or 1.1 billion dead.
And those little efforts by folks like us, might still make the difference between 1 billion dead or 1.1 billion dead.
Lmao, bro what sort of bullshit hopium are you puffing on to think the death toll will be 1.1 billion at worst?!
Fresh water resources are depleting rapidly and arable land is being lost at breakneck speed. If the blue ocean event doesn’t get us all first, the drought and famine will. Humanity will not make it out of the century.
It’s just a random number. No matter how bad it gets, your attitude can only make it even worse.
The capitalist overlords love your compliance and willingness to spread optimistic propaganda to the proletariat. Keep it up buddy, a good worker is a hopeful worker!
But sure whatever, go recycle something and buy an electric car if it makes you feel better. You don’t have much time left anyway, so you might as well be a happy moron.
I pray people stop having children.
Edit: to the hexbear user who accused me of ecofascism and asked “which people should stop having children?” my answer to you is:
Nobody should be having kids because the world is fucking ending.
Reproduction is stupid, selfish and immoral when we literally have a time line of between 6 and 25 years for running out of fresh water and arable land, and we’re looking at 4+°c warming this century.
Hexbear is unfederated with piefed and I’m not going to torture my eyes trying to read this thread on its original instance again just to see if you respond, I’m pretty sure you’re just going to accuse me of silly shit that doesn’t make sense anyway. The last time I spoke to a hexbearer about antinatalism, they called me a eugenicist for talking about not having kids. Lmao.
Which people? Tell us who you would start with.
Claiming that the way to solve climate change is to get rid of people is ecofascism.
This statement just gave me an odd thought. Why not “everyone”. Who says the human race has to endure or continue? I guess that would be considered nihilism?
The word you’re looking for is “genocidal”.
I thought genocide was targeted against a specific race, ethnicity, etc. I’m talking the entire world.
Then there’s even less of a future
The average carbon footprint for a person in the United States is 16 tons, one of the highest rates in the world.
Each new life adds more carbon and pollution to this world and will die suffering ftom resource scarcity.
How selfish can you be to bring yet more people into this hell world, just because you want to have a baby?
All the billionaires are building bunkers.
What about Second Earth?
Isnt that the grift thingy Callum Upton used to rag on?
Let’s make it profitable as well!
Human culture in its entirety has passed a tipping point. It’s all fucked to death.
Pretty sure we’re long past any hope of reversing this fuck up.
It wasn’t a fuck up. It was wittingly perpetrated on us and the planet.
That does not negate the fucked up-edness of our current situation. You can be a fuck up and be responsible for your own life.
So, now will people get out of the way of geoengineering research? Or do we have to wait for the actual famines to start killing people?
Why would I trust the people who did this with the task of geoengineering our way out of this? Because that’s who is pushing all of it. All of the major polluters are pushing that bullshit because funding research into nonsense is cheaper than reducing emissions. Sorry filks, we aren’t gonna stop pillaging the planet, but how about we reduce the sunlight that piwers the entire natural world instead? It’s the same as the many failed attempts at introducing species as biological controls, just on a grander scale.
Why would I trust the people who did this with the task of geoengineering our way out of this?
No, it’s not the same people.
And if nothing is done massive numbers of people will suffer and die. You’re advocating for just letting that happen?
How is it not the same people? What type of geoengineering are you referring to? The main thing I’m referring to is the use of sulfide (I believe, something along those lines) particles to dim the solar input. Which is being pushed by Bill Gates and co., which fuck him by the way. Other options include dumping chemicals into the ocean that would absorb more co2 and precipitate to the bottom, funded by oil companies and sounds just as terrible as blotting out the sun.
No, I’m not advocating for that to happen, I’m saying there is currently no method of geoengineering proposed or in development that is going to help anything. ‘We should geoengineer’ is no different than ‘let the ai centers burn up the planet, they’ll solve the climate crisis.’ It’s more delay tactics when we need to just sop the consumption.
How is it not the same people? What type of geoengineering are you referring to?
Solar geoengineering seems like the most promising. It’s largely being studied by climatologists. The people who are putting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere are industrialists.
Which is being pushed by Bill Gates and co., which fuck him by the way.
So because one particular person you don’t like is involved, screw the science? Let the world burn rather than have it be saved with the involvement of people you don’t like? Wonderful attitude.
Bill Gates is a major philanthropist, BTW. Not sure why you pick his name out as specifically hateworthy.
Also, describing solar geoengineering as “blotting out the sun” suggests you’re not really familiar with how this stuff actually works. So when you say you don’t think any of the proposals will help anything that doesn’t give much weight to your opinion.
You want to give me a brief rundown of how it works then? Cause all I’ve ever heard is using particulates flown into the atmosphere or using some form of cloud seeding to reduce solar load. The particulate one got tested in Turkey maybe? India? I forget, but the only thing I ever heard from that was it pissed off nearby nations and would require constantly dumping more particulates into the atmosphere. Purposely altering cloud formation as the other alternative I’ve heard of seems foolish. I’m not in favor, but I’d love to hear more details of what you think would work.
No, I don’t want you to give me a rundown. I read the works of those climatologists to find out about that stuff, they’re professionals who understand what they’re talking about.
Ok, then give me a rundown. Or name a study or author whose work you like. I am willing to be sold on the idea, because apparently my description is inaccurate.
This is the only sensible solution. Banning fossil fuel like we banned the chemicals that caused acid rain and the hole in the ozone layer? That’s crazy. Building hydro dams and electric trains? Crazier still. Setting off a volcano with a nuke to blot out the sun? Perfectly sensible.
This, yes if the world did not pollute and all of us changed tomorrow it would have been the best, but let’s not lie, this ship has not changed direction. I really think this will give us time and save the most we have to eventually change the ship’s direction. We have basically already geoengineered our way here, let’s geoengineer our way to a better world
