      yes, they were at some point free living bacteria, that was engulfed by another cell, and instead of being digested, they become symbiotic.

      we are symbiotes.

      another fun trivia, they discovered a parasite that infects mitochoria of ticks ovums, and called them “Midichloria mitochondrii” after star wars midichlorians.
